The pictures show this on a small chair with a low back. Will it also work on a larger high backed office chair?

I’ve tried it on huge chairs on several different size chairs. Completely adjustable to fit the chair and where it needs to fall on you.

What is the cover made of and is there any smell?

The cover is a nylon material that is stretchy. That padding feels like there's gel inside. Smell. Nothing gross. Does have a slight silicon smell (I assume from the gel inside of it). Been in our SUV for months now.... no weird smells or fading. Wife loves it.

There are 4 separate 'pillows': the top triangular, a rectanglar one below, and a somewhat oval pillow on either side of the rectangle.Each is 2" deep. If your seat it deep and you are short, you will not find the Fellowes shortens the depth, however, since this was the predicament I was in, I placed a small foam pillow behind the Fellowes and it now 'sticks' out enough for me to provide support.

would it work for airplane seats, like if the straps weren't used?

Hi Jean! This back support would not work for airplane seats. The straps help stabilize the support in place especially since it's a 3-prong cushion. Hope this helps :)
