Wrap your hands around this beautiful book!
This beautiful book dives into the history of weaving, from ancient China to current day. Katey Howes text is a delight to read aloud, beginning and ending with the rhythms of the loom: "Clack. Clack. Swish -- pull back. Bobbin and heddle, foot pedal, no slack." Dinara Mirtalipova's illustrations weave extra stories into the background on each page. Nonfiction back matter is so interesting. A book that deserves revisiting again and again.

A gorgeous book that invites multiple readings.
A young girl learns from a family member the art and skill of weaving but also its vast history from various cultures and time periods. The feeling of inter-connectedness through something so personal as weaving shines through in this book on every page from its lyrical text, each word perfectly chosen, to the gorgeous illustrations that invite multiple readings.

Gorgeous book captures the techniques and traditions of weaving
This is an absolutely beautiful book that follows the journey of a young girl as she is learning to weave from her grandmother, learning specific techniques but also the traditions that wind through history to make weaving a special art. "With clack and swish, with heart and hand / we layer row on row. / Our loom sings tales of fabric, / friendship, families long ago." The lyrical text reads like an ode to weaving as an art, and the illustrations use contrasting blacks, reds, oranges, and blues, to give a vivid sense of the fabric. This is a gorgeous book!

Tradition of weaving captured in poetry and song
"Woven of the World" is a poetic picture book that honors the ancient custom of weaving in cultures around the world. Movement, sound and feeling swirl and connect throughout the beautiful text: "Clack. Clack. Swish - pull back. Bobbin and heddle, foot pedal, no slack." Alongside lyrical stanzas, delicate yet bold art work loops and swirls, accenting and honoring the tools of weaving - thread, loom, needle, deft fingers. The history and practice captured in the text are conveyed with fidelity but not as a list of facts. Rather, from cocoon to pharaoh, and nomads to wedding frocks, the story of threads-on-frames is told as a "loom song" - and a tune that will likely be new to young readers and will introduce them to a powerful idea: that we are all tapestries, "lifelines interlacing" in patterns of purpose.

The act of creating and sharing looms large in this delightful tale of interwoven traditions.
"Clack. Clack.Swish--PULL BACK.Bobbin and heddle, foot pedal, no slack."With this onomatopoeic opening turned refrain, we are immediately drawn through the weaving arts in this extraordinary new read-aloud."Woven of the World" acts as an ode to the art (and musicality) of weaving and, by extension, learning and creativity, tradition and the new.Beautiful folk-style art stirs the imagination and reveals the beauty of interwoven connections--and sets the scene for an ending that invites us all to be a part of the rich tapestry of humanity. This informational picture book features interesting back matter on various weaving traditions (PNW'ers--including Coast Salish weaving!--which I know the teachers will be particularly thrilled about!)Gorgeous, in every sense!
