Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In: The Complete First Season (4DVD)

Even funnier now that I'm an adult
As a kid growing up in the 60s this was one of my favorite tv shows. Back in the day we only had the three stations and if you missed something too bad. R&M Laugh-In was one of those shows I made sure I didn't miss. Chores were done, homework was finished just so as there wouldn't be any parental veto for watching. Then next day it was pretty much a given that most of the kids at school would be repeating the jokes every chance they got. Rewatching these 14 first season episodes reminded me of all of that. As an added bonus, now I get the stuff that went over my head as a kid.Needless to say, I'm happy with my purchase.

Sock It To Me!
What else can you say besides "tip toe through the tulips". If you remember the 60's you know that Monday night was Laugh-In night. Season 1 will bring back lots of memories when television comedy what wasn't afraid to offend. PC alert - Laugh-In was definitely NOT "PC". They really did sock it to you. One note, some of the sound quality goes up and down, but there is a disclaimer referring to the age of the master tapes. Really isn't a concern.

Political humor has been around for a lot longer than people think
I enjoyed the show 50 years ago.It is much better this time around.Rowan & Martin used humor to take on war, injustice, and in general make fun of everybody.(Be sure to watch the extra material on the disc. The interviews with the show's creatior are terrific.Think of it as a period history of humor.Growing up in this time, I can tell you humor was in short supply. We needed all we could get!

sublimely ridiculous and wacky
they really don't make 'em like this anymore. sublimely ridiculous and wacky, no-holds-barred, and plain old fun. some of the jokes are dated and fall flat, but most are hip and silly - i spend a lot of time laughing out loud. a lightning-in-a-bottle cast of regular kooks, plus it is great to see well-known stars let their hair down and join in the craziness. groovy and far out and way ahead of its time.

Defective Disk
I give the Rowan and Martin comedy five stars, but give the physical quality of the four disks zero stars because one of the four disks sent to me would not load onto my disk player. (The other three disks loaded OK). I would be happy if Amazon would replace the defective disk but I consider it a waste of my time to package and return the set as Amazon requires in order to get a replacement.

Like a trip down memory lane
Despite some artifacts in the 50-year old video, watching this was like seeing old friends youhaven't seen, or even thought of, in an age. And because it's the first season, you get towatch some of your favorite characters develop their on-screen personalities. Rememberthe air-headed (and very young) Goldie Hawn? She wasn't an airhead at the start. The beginningsof your favorite recurring skits are there, too. As for the guest stars, it's like a who's who of belovedand now-departed celebrities.Unfortunately, the tapes evidently weren't remastered before the conversion to video, so the picturequality suffers. And of course there was no wide-screen video in those days. The sound quality isoften poor as well. It took some experimentation with the sound modes on my amp before I got audioI could live with. Despite all this, I still give it four stars, just for the fond memories it brought back.

Great
Great to see this series again after more than 50 years. This set consists of 14 shows on 4 discs. There are extras: The Laugh-In pilot (with picture quality not as good as the regular 14 episodes ), Highlights from the 25th Cast Reunion, Interview with Creator George Schlatter, and a lengthy blooper reel. It's a great way to get reacquainted with this series.
