Claudia Schiffer

Claudia Schiffer was my first big celebrity crush, and from time to time, that innocent crush comes back in a big way. Growing up as a young man in the Era of the Supermodel, I would rifle through my sister's fashion magazines to try to catch a better look at her, I'd smile back at her whenever I saw her on a magazine cover, and I'd even "watch" those corny 90s fashion shows just to get a glimpse of "the pretty one with the yellow hair" doing her admittedly awkward walk down the runway. When I was nine, I caught a glimpse of her wearing a floor-length blue Versace gown, her gorgeous blonde hair bathed from behind in ethereal light, piercing blue eyes boring into my soul, her lovely bosoms pushed ever-so-tastefully upwards by bustier...well, I think I broke my mental fan belt then and there. I simply couldn't process the idea of a woman being that stinkin' gorgeous, and she's stuck with me ever since.As much as I remind myself that Claudia is now a lovely, mature woman with a positive attitude about aging and, from everything I've read, is a genuinely good, hardworking, undramatic person who refused to be consumed by the debauchery of her profession, I have some mixed feelings about this book. With a few exceptions (the entire "Barbie Doll" shoot from 1997 is nauseatingly cute, and Ellen von Unwerth is probably overrepresented) the photographs are absolute dynamite, presented in high quality without any intruding text, and although some of the pictures run through the binding, nothing really important is lost. And while Claudia Schiffer as depicted here is indeed a knee-weakeningly beautiful woman, I found myself asking "did Wayne and Garth choose some of these photographs?"*In short, there's an awful lot of nudity on display here. It's all very artful, tasteful, PG-rated nudity of the "arms over nipples, lady bits covered up by an expensive purse" variety, and seeing her, Eva Herzigova, and Helena Christensen all tastefully wedged together wearing nothing but thigh-high hooker boots and Chanel No. 5 is indeed sexy as hell. And yes, she had an extremely impressive physique in her prime. Still, I hoped for a bit more variety in the selection of the images. All of the photographs are from advertising campaigns or magazine shoots, without any candids or runway shots. What I find fascinating about Claudia (and what others might find boring...) are her contradictions; half Hollywood starlet, half Teutonic Amazon woman, friendly and confident but incredibly shy, the wholesome Barbie girl with a beguiling naughty side, a modern-day Brigitte Bardot, but way less racist and less concerned about animals. Unfortunately, I'm not totally getting that vibe here.Perhaps my favorite photographs of Claudia Schiffer were taken by Richard Melloul in 1992, depicting her alone in a theater wearing a simple butterfly-pattern dress and minimal makeup. At no point do we see anything more provocative than a bare armpit - and yet, there's an overwhelming sense of calmness and confidence, a sweet simmering sexuality, an almost overwhelming come-hitherness not immediately obvious at first glance. I wish there were more images like that here. For $25, I can't complain, and most of the pictures are indeed stunning, but I feel like a proper photographic career retrospective is yet to be seen.*Page 128. You're welcome.

A great book from Supermodel Claudia Schiffer. Beautiful book with many wonderful photos of Claudia's career in the Fashion World. A first time ever book on this TOP SUPERSTAR MODEL!

The book is full of several photographs of her career. The cover is a little deceiving though showing her naked and then that is the only one but the book was good overall.

A real historic journey of great photos of one of the most beautiful women to have ever grace the earth. I purchase the book as used, and it arrived in really great condition.

Con la colaboración de la propia Schiffer, este libro es una selección de aproximadamente 175 fotos de la top, presentadas en un libro ciertamente lujoso (tapa dura, buen papel, tamaño grande, sólida encuadernación) que aspira a convertirse en su álbum definitivo para la posteridad, porque texto hay bien poco (en inglés) : Apenas un par de escuetos prólogos de una o dos páginas y algunas breves declaraciones, de pocas líneas, de fotógrafos, diseñadores y compañeras de profesión de la alemana. Las fotos en sí no llevan comentario alguno, si bien al final del volumen se indica su fecha, autor y medio de procedencia.Todo ello personalmente no me molesta ; no estaba interesado en una biografía, sino en un libro puramente visual. Nada que objetar, por tanto. Pero sí hay dos características que me decepcionan en este trabajo. La primera es de diseño : Los breves textos que he mencionado se presentan con tipografía gigante ocupando páginas completas, que unidas a otras carentes de foto alguna que se limitan a actuar como "separadores", supone un desperdicio de espacio injustificado a mi juicio. Lo mismo ocurre con algunas fotos que, a diferencia de la mayoría (reproducidas a toda página, lo cual es la agradable tónica del libro) se presentan en tamaño medio con un grueso "marco" de espacio en blanco alrededor, en lo que constituye otra decisión incomprensible a mi parecer. Otra decisión de diseño discutible ya apuntada por otro comprador es la idea de presentar algunas fotos a doble página (nuevamente una minoría, como algunas visiones de grupo de Schiffer con otras tops de la época : Crawford, Campbell, Turlington, etc.) sin tener en cuenta que el pliegue central del libro abierto impide apreciarlas debidamente. En definitiva, aunque la edición está claramente cuidada, hay algunas opciones de presentación que me resultan totalmente erróneas y deslucen ligeramente el conjunto.Con todo, mi segunda decepción (esta más importante) es la selección de fotos. Con aceptable criterio la inmensa mayoría pertenecen a los años 1989-1995 (desde el vertiginoso despegue a la fama de la modelo a su establecimiento como top de élite) y 2008-2009 (esto es, justo antes de su retiro de las pasarelas), presentadas a color o en blanco y negro dependiendo de cómo se publicaran originalmente (aproximadamente hay mitad y mitad). Eso hace que muchas de las imágenes más conocidas y celebradas de Claudia, firmadas por los fotógrafos más prestigiosos de moda, estén en el libro. Pero me frustra el muy amplio espacio ocupado por artistas como Ellen Van Unwerth (claramente muy amiga de la modelo ; de hecho llega incluso a aportar al libro una decena de fotos nunca publicadas anteriormente) cuyo estilo (unas veces con irritante sobreexposición, otras con un blanco y negro con exceso de grano) no es santo de mi devoción. No niego que haya creado algunas imágenes muy famosas de la Schiffer (las campañas para los vaqueros Guess, por ejemplo) pero hubiera preferido más espacio para fotógrafos como Ritts, Meisel o Testino (que están , pero no tanto como me gustaría) en la selección y que para mi gusto crean una fotografía mucho más brillante y rica en matices. Evidentemente es una cuestión de gustos, pero todo en conjunto hace que, aunque este libro sea claramente recomendable para los fans de Claudia Schiffer, no sea tan redondo como personalmente hubiera deseado.

Estéticamente la portada es bonita, pero el dorso y la tapa trasera no me ha gustado personalmente nada, porque tiene un color rosa chicle. En cuanto a la selección de fotos, me habría gustado mas diversidad, no que solo haya en la gran mayoría fotos de los primeros años. Me ha faltado ver mas su trayectoria desde el inicio hasta mas avanzada su carrera. Hay fotos bonitas, otras que a mi no me lo parecen tanto pero sobretodo mi pega es con la estética del libro, páginas completas en rojo, otras en rosa o azul y eso a mi no me gusta. En definitiva, para mi que he pagado 18€ no puedo pedir mas, Si hubiese pagado un precio mas alto quizás lo habría devuelto.
