Q: Is this a genuine Kipling? What’s with the monkey?

Mine is genuine. They changed the monkey. They may be going back to the original one. I like the rubber one though. Not as bulky.

Q: How many inches long is the strap?

two sides...this includes buckle on each side Short side with buckle@8 3/4 ! The long side can be adjusted mine is 18 inches into buckle and another @ 8 inches plus buckle

Q: strap - how long is the strap, does it extend so it can be used as a crossbody or a purse as well?

Strap is long but not that long for the crossbody .

Q: Does this fit and iPhone 8 plus?

Yes. I have iPhone 11 Pro Max and it fits .
