Vegan Tacos: Authentic and Inspired Recipes for Mexico's Favorite Street Food

Excellent, thorough, delicious, and full of help and substitutions
Excellent, thorough cookbook for Mexican taco cuisine, great for vegans, vegetarians, and carnivores.A massive variety of recipes and types of tacos, ranging from quick and easy to laborious and needing plans. Most long recipes have some sort of "hack" to make them easier if desired, and food substitutions are noted throughout. Except for the cheese chapter there are almost no "special vegan ingredients", just lots of fresh vegetables, spices, peppers and oils. It is a regional cookbook so if you live in an area where common Mexican ingredients are scarce, this book may not be for you, but if you have any sort of International section in your supermarket or a Mexican grocery available nothing here is difficult to find. Back to that cheese chapter though... it is the curse of being a vegan that a lot of work will go into getting a good homemade vegan cheese. If you want to work for it there are several great recipes included here, if you don't want to do the work (or cannot get the somewhat uncommon ingredients) there are worthy alternatives listed. Even if you are unable to find every taco ingredient in this book (cactus, jackfruit) the majority are made from common fresh foods found anywhere. I really appreciated the help provided through the entire book, whether in giving time "hacks" or food substitutions, the author really wants to provide the instructions and means for everyone to enjoy these recipes, and it is always clear how much he enjoys his work in this book. I also love the fusion taco recipes and cannot wait to try every single dessert taco. At the end of the book are also side dishes, drinks and delicious sounding cocktails. There are gorgeous pictures throughout although not for every recipe, but you don't need them to have your mouth watering as you read through the book. I'm even inspired to try making my own tortillas! My biggest problem with the book is deciding which recipe to make, and whether I have enough time to do a homemade taco dinner AND taco dessert.

So Much Yum
This is not just my favorite vegan cookbook, but my favorite cookbook in general. My only regret is that I bought the Kindle version instead of the paperback. He gives you everything...making tortillas from scratch, a ton of different fillings, toppings, salsas, hot sauces, side dishes. And although the taco recipes are delicious, it's the mojo de ajo and achiote rice that changed mah life. Honestly, I don't even usually cook the specific taco recipes. I'll just eat some well seasoned beans, sliced avocado, and salsa with fresh homemade tortillas and achiote rice on the side. And I know toast isn't Mexican, but I love me some big fat royal corona beans mashed on toast with a drizzle of mojo de ajo and red pepper flakes or a few drops of one of his hot sauce recipes. With so many options you can continually reconfigure things to avoid repeating the same flavor profile over and over again. I am, however, still a little hesitant about that vegan hot dog taco recipe.

This cookbook is okay....
I thought I would love this cookbook, but I didn't. I love Mexican food, have been vegan forever, and am adept in the kitchen. It does have a nicely written history of tacos, but I bought it for the recipes. I launched a taco party off this cookbook's arrival. All I can say is thank goodness for the homemade margaritas! I tried 7 recipes, most fairly labor intensive. I felt in most of the cases they varied from a smidge off the mark, to a lot off the mark. Tacos with Pintos Borrachos, Poblano Strips and Queso Fresco was a lot off the mark. It took a significant amount of doctoring to enter the realm of edible. Hen of the Woods tacos With Coconut Milk and Poblano Strips was my favorite, as well as the groups' favorite. Very nice flavor here! The Chilies de Arbol Salsa was hot and delicious, and gets even better as it ages in the frig. I would make this again just to have on hand. The Salsa Verde lacked depth, and we thought the crushed Red Salsa was pedestrian. For me to love a cookbook it has to have more consistently delicious recipes. This was all over the place.

Fun and inspires one to improvise!
I am not a full time vegan, but I do observe Orthodox Christian fasting rules (which require giving up all animal products) and was looking for something fresh to help me through the 40 day Nativity Fast this year. This cookbook has been really fun and has done the trick. My only criticism is that in a way there is too much of it. I really only paid close attention to a couple of the recipes before striking off on my own and improvising with whatever ingredients I had on hand. This cookbook has provided a welcome new addition to my cooking repertoire!

My mouth is watering!
I just got this, and haven't had the chance to try recipes yet. I'm a Mexican food snob (hubby of 38 years) and have traveled extensively in the Mexico City area. I've been vegetarian for many years, and am going towards veganism. These recipes look fabulous, traditional. I feel left out when I'm not eating tacos and everybody else is. No more! I'm excited to try these recipes!

Love it!
Love it!!! I enjoy reading his personal accounts and history..However, so far Mrs. Boss isnt into recreating any of his recipes, except we have made some of the corn tortillas!!! Thick, warm, earthy, srumptuous corn tortillas!! can you beat them???She prefers flour.. but I haven't told her about making those yet.. shhhhhhhh... :)Yes, flour tortillas are in his books too...I prefer corn with way less fat calories..

Amazing!
I’ve had this cookbook for a few months now, and it has quickly become my favourite cookbook. Yes, you will have to make a trip to a latin market — or make a few online purchases — in order to stock your panty with authentic staples. But it is well worth it! Every week I find myself trying another recipe from this book, and I have never been disappointed.
