This is a genuine BBC Micro:bit v2.2 electronics learning board. While you probably know the BBC for their television coverage, they also have a history of producing learning computers: in the 1980s, they ran a series on computing literacy and also released a computer called the BBC Micro, which became very popular in the UK and sparked a generation's interest in technology. In 2016, they returned with the Micro:bit, riffing on popular devices like the Arduino and Raspberry Pi to produce a new learning device in that same tradition.This kit includes the latest version of the Micro:bit board, along with a battery holder and cable. The Micro:bit can work with either a laptop or tablet; it uses Bluetooth to connect to a tablet, so it's possible you could work entirely wirelessly without a cable if you wanted to.There's quite a bit you can explore with just the bare board - in addition to a grid of LEDs and two buttons, it has an accelerometer, temperature sensor, magnet sensor/compass, touch sensor and more. There's also a set of inputs/outputs on the bottom you can use to build various circuits, although this kit doesn't include any of the parts that would be needed to do that.This is a standard board that's sold by a variety of resellers in different configurations - GeeekPi is just bundling it together with some basic accessories. Make sure to shop around to make sure you're getting the best deal and the accessories you think you need. The base board is designed to be very affordable and the only real accessory you need to get started and tackle a lot of interesting projects is a USB cable or power source.The Micro:bit is a fun way to learn about computing whether you're young or old. This kit comes with pretty much everything needed to get started, even usable without the AAA batteries if powered from the USB cable. Without even reading, when you plug it in goes through a little walkthrough of the features using the LEDs on the front as a very basic way to provide instructions to utilize the input. This is a huge improvement over the original in that it provides an additional input (microphone) and output (speaker) which might not sound like much on the surface, but greatly increases the engagement with my kids. This pairs excellently with a cheap Yahboom Tiny:bit robot car kit that my kids built and love to play with.Pros:+ all-in-one kit+ pre-programmed with a tutorial+ instruction sheet with web references for learning to code+ battery holder! This little microcontroller is so loaded with features to play with, you can really spend a lot of time creating different functions. I am familiar with other kinds of single-board programmers such as this, but there's something about this one that I find especially entertaining. The micropython interface is very easy to learn, and you can find many other programming exercises on YouTube.Right out of the box this device really shows you what it can do once you apply power. The board is very well assembled and the open contacts make hooking up peripherals easy using just alligator clips and jumper wire. My son and I are currently playing with programming servos based on temperature just for fun.This is just the main board, so if you do not have any peripherals like servos or other inputs or outputs, then that's ok, because there are plenty of things you can do using just what's already built into this device.My only complaint would be that this does not have on-board power. It comes with a battery pack that you have to plug into the device if you want it to be truly mobile. This is not a huge deal, as I plan on 3D printing a case for it so that it keeps these together, but not everyone has that luxury or motivation. Other than that, this is a gem. This would be great as a gift for a learner of any age who is looking to break into the world of programming, or even for a hobbyist who just enjoys tinkering with devices. Would recommend.

Looking to learn more about programming and hardware?This board is a ton of fun in a little tiny little package. The Micro:bit comes with preloaded software, so it can be used immediately out of the box. While playing with it, I learned that it has built-in lights, speaker, accelerometer, microphone, buttons, micro USB port, Bluetooth and more. My first project with the Micro:bit was to display my name on the main display.Pros:- Easy Setup: The setup is simple and fast. I installed two AAA batteries, flicked the on/off switch, and it was up and running. (See photos)- Connections: I used the micro USB connection for programming the board. The board supports Bluetooth, but I didn't try it.- Programming: There are lots of code examples on the web. I used one to display my name on the built-in display. Amazing..- Resources: There are a number of websites for code, learning about the hardware etc. I copied the code for displaying my name from one of them.Cons:- None: I don't have any bad to say about this device.I recommend this device to anyone looking to learn about hardware and software. The Micro:bit is extremely accessible to everyone. It's a risk free environment to learn.

About as hard to learn as an arduino, arduino is much more useful.I bought it to learn about it, what it is.Expensive for what it is. It has a big following though, I guess.

Hi - I just want to share my experience fo this board - It works well with my computer and the programming is very easy. I used it with multiple programs and all works well. The only part I need to buy is the connecter with server motors- it will be handy if it comes with some elevator cables.
