2 of the most popular characters in the graphic medium join forces!
The Rocketeer by Dave Stevens and The Spirit by Will Eisner are two of comicdom's most beloved characters. They are a perfect match because their respective worlds compliment each other so well. The plot is interesting and seems like something Eisner himself would have written in an early Spirit story to have the Spirit travel. A city councilman for Central City has been murdered in Los Angeles, so Commissioner Dolan, his daughter Ellen and Denny Colt (The Spirit) travel there to investigate. Of course, The Rocketeer and his supporting cast show up and adventure ensues. At first, they don't like each other, but eventually the two heroes have to team up to win the day. Betty, Cliff's girlfriend, seems pretty taken with The Spirit and Ellen is her usual investigative self. Like most modern comics, this story seems best when read as a whole as opposed to issue by issue. It was nice to see The Octopus show up in this one as he is the arch-nemesis of The Spirit. In fact, the villainy in this story almost seems more important than the crossover itself.Waid has written a pretty interesting, slightly cliched slice of pulp fiction, here. The art is varied and by the end of the story rather daunting to get through. However, all in all, this is worth of both Will Eisner and Dave Stevens. If you like pulp characters, golden age flavor or just the time period in your comics, pick this up. Good job, Mark Waid and Co.

Change in artwork detracts from an otherwise good story.
I'm a sucker for crossovers. I always love them. Mark Waid- Easily my favorite writer. So this was right up my alley. I own Darwyn Cooke's Spirit collection and one of Dave Steven's old Rocketeer books. I love the Golden Age era of comics- The Noir feeling and heroes were straight heroes. This story is a good combination of the two of them. One complaint, the only reason I won't give five stars, the artwork of the second half is so radically different, almost childish, that it detracted from my enjoying the story completely. Other than that, it's a great book.

Too many artists spoil the broth.
Two different artists drew this graphic novel and the one who did the first half was, by far, the better artist. The artist who did the second halfhas to go back to art school because all the heroes, the Rocketeer and the Spirit, have rectangular chins. The story itself is typical comic fare because even the Spirit is human, and anybody who goes up in the sky to fight with baddies on an airplane has to be nuts. However, what saves this graphic novel is good girl art, the Rocketeer's and the Spirit's girlfriend, Ellen, and the comedy relief by Ellen's father, Inspector Dolan. Too badthe artist who did the first half couldn't do the entire graphic novel. If he did, I would have given four stars. Okinawan Ace, author of The Sex Changing Princess Bride.

Mark Waid tackles Dave Stevens' & Will Eisner's Characters
All in all Rocketeer/Spirit Pulp Friction was fun!! A little sexist in its use of Ellen and Betty and the abrupt art change from Paul Smith to J. Bone was a little jarring-however both artists did a nice job on the characters and pretty much maintained a Dave Stevens and Will Eisner look on them. But very different styles!

Thrills! Chills! Explosions!
The combined fun of the Spirit and the Rocketeer is almost too much to take. Almost! Loved the writing and the art. Don’t know how this slipped past me when it was released.

This is a good story teaming up 2 of my favorites
I have purchased the trades of all of the recent Rocketeer series and am a fan of the character. This is a good story teaming up 2 of my favorites, but it does suffer a bit with the different art teams.
