(review revised 10/28/09)The Gear Wrench 7 Piece Magnetic Oil Drain Plug Set is a high quality ratchet set with nice sockets that have finger grips for those hand adjustments. While is labled for drain plug usage, one would probably find several other applications.Unfortunately for me, it will be a low-use item. I didn't note that the version I purchased was metric. In fact, at the time it was NOT noted by the seller (not Amazon). Since my 40-year-old truck most definitely uses a standard sized plug, I won't be using it there. And right now, it's cheaper for me to take my Honda somewhere than to do it myself. Additionally, even with the low-profile ratchet and sockets, you still need some decent clearance to get this where you need it. I ended up buying a flex-end wratcheting wrench in the size I needed to slip over the drain plug, which works better for me.If you are a casual home mechanic that regularly works on newer cars or imports that use metric sized drain plugs, then this would probably be a good purchase. The nicely milled and cnc'd color-coded sockets are easy to identify, and have a good weight and quality to them. And the magnetic feature is nice to keep the plug from dropping into your oil (nothing worse than fishing for a plug in hot oil)! However, if you only work on one vehicle, or if you have very little clearance to get to the plug, your money would probably be better spent on a high-quality ratcheting wrench of the size you need.

If you change your own oil, this will make it a lot easier. The sockets are well made and fit a standard 3/8 drive as well as the proprietary gear wrench ratchet which may allow the use of the sockets in some situations. After loosening the drain plug the knurled collar makes it easy to remove by hand even with rubber gloves and the strong magnet keeps the plug from falling into the mess of used oil. The gasket may not be as well behaved, and there is still a chance some oil will run down your arm to the elbow, but those things can occur in any case. The rounded spline that fits into the ratchet is a good grip point after the plug is about half way loose; with fingers below the collar some of the initial oil surge will be deflected by the collar.

The sockets magnets are strong. The only thing that would make this set nicer was if you didn't have to use specialty ratchet. You can not use regular ratchet on this. Sometimes you need a little bit of an extension to loosen drain plugs but this does work well

I use this set professionally everyday. I am ASE certified, as a Maintenance and Light Repair Technician. I do oil changes, and 22 point inspections. This set makes oil changes quick and easy. I would recommend this to any pit tech. Or anyone who has multiple oil changes everyday. This set is sturdy, easy to use, and versitile.

Alright so I work in a fairly fast paced shop and have to do fluid changes quite often as well. So i grabbed these up to keep my main tools from getting so messy (sounds dumb I know). But the ratchet locks up if you put a good bit of force on them. I've seen cars come from shops like grease pro and tuffy where they think tight is using 1,000 ft-lbs for some reason. So I have to put some body weight behind drain bolts to break them loose and the ratchet will bind up and lock. Gotta smack it on the pan or the frame to break it free. So that is kind of annoying. Another problem is when they arrived, all but the 19mm, the magnets inside were not pressed in far enough for the socket to get a good bite so I had to throw them in a vise and smack them a couple times with a hammer and an extension to sink them farther into the socket. After that, I will say, they work great. Third, the 19mm magnet inside likes to stay attached to the drain bolt everytime you use it.

This GearWrench Oil Drain Plug Socket 7 Piece set is outstanding. I just love it! It is so very easy to use and has performed flawlessly for me. I use this product for every oil change I conduct whether for my own vehicles or on friends vehicles. I have never rounded another oil drain plug again using this product. I highly recommend this product for any of your do-it-yourselfers or even those that own or work in their auto shop. It is very durable and the magnetic sockets make getting the drain plugs our so much easier.

Seems to he good quality. Ratchet works well, as expected from gearwrench. Just wish the sockets were longer in length. That's my only complaint.

Works too good. Lol. Magnet works better than expected. Almost a pain when you are trying to figure out size cause they all get magnetic to bolt. I really enjoy though.
