The Fires of Jubilee: Nat Turner's Fierce Rebellion

I usually read something for Black History Month. This year it was Nat Turner’s turn. Not knowing much about the rebellion save a quick look at Wikipedia, it was very interesting and really opened my eyes into the complex world of slavery in Virginia in the early 19th century. I have recommended it to several people and would buy again (if I needed a second copy).

Fantastic book about a real hero to his people.

If there are any of you that have doubts about the role slavery played in the Civil War, this book is for you. It is a great narrative of not only the slave rebellion led by Nat Turner, but of the issue of slavery in American politics long before the war. Just as abolitionist John Brown, Nat turner somehow lost his way in trying to address the slave issue. This is a realy good study into the mind of a man that felt he was led by God to lead a bloody insurrection against the white man and the ideas that the black man was always destined to be in subjection. Nat Turner never had any other plan than to punish the slaveholders. His type of punishment will chill you. Even though he may have gone about the revolt in all the wrong ways, it actually opened the door to discussions, both pro and con on this peculier institution some 30 years prior to the war. I would highly recommend this work as an excellant study on the overall problems of slavery.

Great book that I bought for class but I ended up adding to my personal library

slavery was hell and should have been fought by any means necessary. however, reading descriptions of the murder of small chilldren is tough. its an important book and its written very well.

I had to purchase this for college, and just like my textbooks that I order from Amazon, I absolutely ADORE these eBooks. I never have any complications downloading it to any of my kindle apps on any devices and there's never any "down servers" or other technological issues that may stand in the way of a deadline. I won't be buying/renting any books for college from anywhere other than Amazon! It's so incredibly student-friendly.
