Hitman Absolution (PS3)

What a beautiful game and story! But...
Cut this down to a few hours and it should be the Hitman movie. The plot and acting are absolutely wonderful. You learn a lot about 47. You never usually see or learn about his private thoughts or life, but in this game he is mostly working for himself and the plot is driven by his personal experience. The briefings are his own thoughts, instead of Diana's pre recorded agency briefings.I love this game for these reasons. Wow. Just wow. Down to the music and cinematography during cut scenes. For example Ave Maria plays while 47 walks toward the camera on a dusty road, as a fire rages behind him, after an intense scene and it is just gold. And the graphics are wonderful. Now for the bad and why I gave it only two stars:This is not a Hitman game. It does not follow the tried and true format of totally separate missions where 47 is almost always in a totally different location, frequently an entirely different country. Instead each level flows from the previous and we play every little moment. Because of this, many levels are just where you go from A to B, evade guards, get an item, etc. (very rare in the other games). Then there's the disguise system. Debatably hyper realistic! Yet no fun at all. Your disguises rarely work. You have to avoid guards completely or stay out of their eyesight for all but a few seconds at a time or they see through you. This is so absurdly difficult that the developers added a blending ability where 47 covers his face or acts like he's talking on a radio or some other casual move. Doesn't really make any sense most of the time and it burns through a finite game resource called "instinct". Once you're out of instinct, you're out of luck until you earn it back via different game mechanics (this is on the preset difficulty. On the easiest instinct is nearly infinite and the game is laughably easy). It made it more of a stealth game where you are constantly hiding. In all the others many disguises allow you to calmly plan what you want to do while exploring certain areas, so long as you don't act crazy no one sees through your disguise. This is particularly true from Contracts on up, but even in Codename: 47 and Silent Assassin the disguises were more durable than in Absolution. Finally, you cannot leave a mission in "high alert". So if you do something crazy to finish your objectives, you have to hide and wait for the guards to calm down before exiting. This was never the case in any previous game and completely changes the open ended nature of the game: you can no longer go nuts to finish a mission, you are required to be stealthy. You can't even take out every guard in a level like in all previous installments to avoid this problem; they call for back up.Avast! Spoilers ahead!Hitman is tasked with killing Diana, his longtime handler. He shoots her and then she, before dying, convinces him to care for a young lady named Victoria. Victoria is a clone created by a rogue ICA agent. 47 hides her in a church orphanage while seeking information. He returns to find the orphanage under attack and carries Victoria, now weakened due to complications of being a clone and having a mysterious necklace linked to her health, to the elevator. He whispers to her that he is not going to let anything bad happen to her. It is so sweet to hear 47 speak like that: he has a heart after all! Some would argue this is out of character. Yet they would forget that 47 once quit being a hitman and became a gardener for a church, where he befriended Father Vittorio. When Vittorio was kidnapped, 47 began taking on suicide missions in distress! He then found and rescued his friend despite great personal danger. So he's always had a heart, he just very rarely bares it.Things get sticky after this, I'm not going to write out the entire plot, just wanted to point out some of the things that make the game so beautiful, unique, and deserving of credit for these aspects.Another point where we feel how human 47 actually is, is where we hear his thoughts in the briefing and he states that he dreads what he may find in the laboratory where the mission takes place. He also orders (presumably) whisky at his hotel and puts on a silk robe to rest, which shows that he does like to relax with a drink like normal person. Plus it is pretty funny to do the mission that follows in the robe as it's very small and ill fitting for him.So, there you have it: stellar content, awful gameplay that strays too far from the format of it's predecessors. Really a tragedy of a game.

Finally we have a game that cares about offline mode, just like the old days!
It's a miracle just how having no multiplayer makes a game so damn good, it's reminiscent of the days of the old consoles where online gaming wasn't big and how developers focussed solely on the single player aspect of a game, it shows a lot, these days there are not enough games like this, with the ABSENCE of multiplayer (yes, there is NO multiplayer and it's not a rushing game either so don't buy it if you're looking for some sort of Assassins Creed with guns type game) you can see just how much effort has gone into this game.It is NOT a game for the rushing type of player, if this is your first Hitman game (as it is mine) you will get a surprise shock at how slow it is, you cannot simply rush into a place and kill your targets, it will take a long time stealthing your way around the environments, which I must say, are beautiful to look at, the amount of detail is stunning when running in HD, but back to the gameplay, the control mechanics take time to adjust to but are great after a while, they're fluid and avoid that clunky control mechanic seen in some games (RE6 we're looking at you here), as I mentioned previously, this game is SLOW, it forces you to take your time because if you rush, you will die, unless you're playing on easy, which I don't recommend as that will pretty much negate the point of the whole stealth aspect of the game, to stay alive you really really have to think, there are so many ways to kill your target, I had a pleasant surprise on my first one when it said there are TWELVE ways to kill one guy, which basically means a whole lot of replayability.PROS:- Superb gameplay mechanics- Points system which makes you want to replay the level to complete the challenges in each level- Story is very lengthy due to the massive amount of stealth which is rare these days- Contracts mode, create your own challenges for the world to play and for you to play others contracts- So many ways to go through a level, it's refreshing to see a game where YOU can CHOOSE your OWN way through a level!CONS:- None in particularOverall, if you're new to the Hitman series (like me) I'd say this is a good place to start, as long as you have patience, if you're an action packed game lover, who loves rushing i.e CoD, Battlefield, MoH players stay away from this unless you can adjust to the slow pace of this, I love fast paced games like CoD don't get me wrong but this is a game for patient, collected and dare I say it, intelligent players..or rather, killers. Good luck 47.
