Works well and came perfectly pre threaded! for anyone unaccustomed to a Serger/Overlock machine, it is always a learning curve but this works very well! It certainly is slightly noisy as all overlock machines tend to be, but it is certainly worth the investment for any sewist or garment creator

Seems to work well, I’m used to only using industrial machines, So this small thread business isn’t fun. Threading it is easy but frustrating, only for the fact of pushing thin thread through holes :). Once I got it going, I tested on jeans, Cordura, and vinyl. Seems to handle all with ease. It won’t get a ton of use but it’ll suit the need when Arises. One con so far: the thread stand is flimsy. I’ll probably modify or replace it.

Really works like a heavy duty machine and has been dependable for the 6 weeks I have had it. I sew 6 days a week as I make and sell items using canvas and t-shirt material and it switches between the fabrics without any tension adjustment and handles both types of fabric easily and smoothly. The lift lever is super convenient for raising pressure foot. It came with a catch tray that the previos one I ordered and returned in two weeks did not include. A catch tray is just common sense and do not know why other brands do not include it. Being able to remove part of the deck is great for sewing small items that I would have to constantly stop and adjust the small small toddler skirts I make. I sew and sell items at markets and this machine has been reliable. If my other serger which is 12 years old should finally quit I would replace it with this same Brother machine. This is the first Brother brand I have bought and very happy with it.

Great serger. Well made. Zero problems.The only draw back for me was the oil stinks that brother uses and it’s been lingering for quite a while.

This is my first own serger. Before I had some experience with my mother's old serger, but I couldn't make friends with it. I thought this type of machine was too complicated, so for years I postponed getting it. But when this one came, it took me almost no time and only one video class to learn all basic seams and actually start making things.Also, I was concerned that it may be loud. I live in an apartment building, and I can hear my neighbor snoring. So noise was important. The reviews were contradictory on this matter, and now I know the reason: it needs oiling right away + at least every month. When it gets dry, it may get noisy. When it's well lubricated, it is no different than a sewing machine. Just order some oil right away, it's really easy to apply it.I like that it uses regular sewing needles. When it comes to thread, it's kind of picky (which I heard all sergers are). I tried using some cheap no-brand thread from China, and it just breaks, while my sewing machine is fine with this thread. I love the extension table and use it all the time.

Oh my gosh I was so excited to receive my brother serger , it came with everything promised and pre threaded . I've used it a few times and I am a happy girl ! my old new home serger lasted 28 yrs and was finally giving out so I researched for months before choosing this brother st4031 with a metal frame . I recommend oiling the machine right away before using .I am a very pleased with this machine and would highly give it a 5 star and tell y'all it's worth the purchase!

Please save yourself the mess I am in and do not spend your money on this machine. As an experienced sewist, I decided I wanted to update my machines. I was so happy with the new Brother strong and tough machine that I bought. It has worked so well for me. So when I decided to get a serger, I went with the same thing: the Brother strong and tough serger.I spent hours and hours rethreading this machine. The thread kept breaking. I have read and reread the manual, trying to figure out why it is so sensitive. I have tried all different kinds of thread. They all break. I changed needles. I adjusted tension. I tried everything that was in the manual. After a month of this I decided to return the serger as defective and get a new one.Four months into the new one, I start having trouble with thread breaking again. So I switch to thicker thread and try oiling it every time I use it. That worked for another month and a half until the thread breaking started again. I cannot explain to you the frustration at never finishing my projects because I am constantly rethreading and adjusting this serger only to have the thread break again!I called customer service. What a waste of time. She told me to rethread my maching and change my needles. Something is wrong with a machine that is only a few months old and is never functioning. I cannot return it and the woman on the phone would only read the manual to me. So she told me to take it to a Brother approved repair shop. The closest shop is an hour from my house. I drive it there and a week later, I get an email that they rethreaded the machine and adjusted the tension and now it works fine and that is not covered by warranty so I will be paying for repairs on a SIX MONTH OLD MACHINE!!
