This is the one to take on your trip
Before heading to Borneo, I checked out both this guide and the one by Phillips. Phillipps' Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo: Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan . The latter is a great read, with interesting tidbits about birds and early Borneo ornithologists scattered about. However, this guide is newer, with better illustrations, reflecting the latest taxonomy.Besides, it is smaller and easier to pack, both in your luggage and in the field.Read the Phillips guide at home, then take this one with you.

Probably the best book out on Borneo
Probably the best book out on Borneo. It made birding Brunei fun and easy. Now if I could just get used to the taxonomy...

Good Guide, But Recommend Phillipps Instead
This is a good field guide but I would recommend taking the Phillipps guide on a trip instead. I brought both on a recent trip to Borneo. This guide was missing a couple migratory species that we saw and is laid out in a way that caused confusion. It was helpful to have the additional information to confirm a few species.

Must for Borneo
I'm a bird-watcher, not ornithologist. I wanted a practical field guide. I went to Borneo and found this book to be perfect: had the all the birds I saw and was not too bulky to carry.

Excellent guide by a regional expert
An excellent guide by an expert. Very good clear lay-out. Since Indonesia is so wide-spread and home to so many species and endemics I hope she does similar separate guides for Sulawesi, New Guinea, and particularly Wallacea.

Birds of Borneo: Myers vs Phillipps
I've got to admit, I preferred the Phillipps' field guide with it's larger illustrations and more information on natural history. After comparing with my friend's I had to get my own copy.Susan Myers book is smaller and lighter, does do a more accurate job with SOME of the illustrations compared to Phillipps' and her maps seem to be a bit more specific. Her notes on range and locations are pretty good.Maybe you'll have to get a copy of each to be the judge?

but do like to have an idea of what the birds are ...
I am not a serious birder, but do like to have an idea of what the birds are that I do spot. As yet I have not got to Borneo to use it but judging by the comparison with other guide books I have used elsewhere, it seems exactly what I want. It is not too big or heavy, the illustrations are much better than having only photos, it has small maps of locations next to each species description, and finally does not cost an arm and a leg! Another feature I like is the double page inside the back cover that illustrates a generic bird for each species that for me is useful to identify the family a bird might be from.

Dies liegt an Unterschiedlichen Zeichnern.

Comprehensive guide with good descriptions. A bit heavy to carry around as a travel guide, but good for referring to. Enabled us to pick out nearly all of the species we saw in Borneo.

Recommendable field guide
Very complete field guide. Illustrations and text are on a high Level. Size of the book absolutely allows taking it into the field.Possible improvement: illustrations (especially maps) could be printed in a bigger size.Overall: very complete and recommendable field guide.
