The best I have found for its purpose
I have two boxes of ESL books, and found that this series is easily the best for its purpose. It is aimed at the recent immigrant who wants to get into the American-speaking community and learn high quality English. It is too conversational and too much at the everyday-living requirements for people not living in an American community. Many books I have concentrate on one aspect of studying English, but this is an excellent all-around series; you need only this one series and don't need to spend your money buying a library of ESL books. It is for use best in a small (<13 students), interactive class, and probably not suitable for a large sit-at-your-desk classroom. Other things I like about it is that it has excellent pronunciation exercises and the students have fun using the well-thought-out conversations. The weaknesses are that it could use more conversations in each chapter, and some of the series books seem to be unavailable. I have tried to order some more, but Amazon says that they are unavailable. This is not a series for people who want/need to get up-to-speed quickly, or for people who just want to learn to read well. And it is not good for self-study. But it is quite complete - the people studying with these books will learn to speak like a native American. The only complaint I get is that it takes a long time to get all the basics. But I think that this is just necessary if you want to learn English properly.I supplement these books with clips from American sitcoms, which I play over and over again until everyone understands them. These books are so good that I refuse to teach ESL using any others.

Great workbook for teaching kids ESL
I bought 3 different workbooks to use with ESL kids ages 10-14 and this is by far my favorite. It has tons of pictures and is especially easy to use interactively. What's more, sometimes it can be hilarious! I don't know if the humor is intentional but lots of times I find myself cracking up in front of the students at something in the book. Example: There's a picture of two raggedy men sitting on a bench with a makeshift fire and a sign behind them that says CITY PARK. Question: "Are they businessmen?" Answer: "No, they aren't. They're bums!" Laughed a good 3 minutes on that one.So I don't know about everything being terribly appropriate, but I love this workbook and the kids definitely show more enthusiasm than with the other books. It's very intuitive, fun and interesting. The downside is that it's a tad pricey, actually maybe more than a tad (triple the price of the other workbooks in fact!). Still, if you're looking for something to teach kids basic English, I recommend this workbook as the best option you'll be able to find in Barnes & Nobles or Borders.

Very Popular With the Students
We are using this book as a guideline to develop lessons for a class of students who are all at the beginning level. We decided that it would be better if each student had his own book so we offered to order the books for the students. Every student, every single one, accepted the offer. In addition to teaching English, the book has a lot of examples and a lot of practice lessons. Not only do the students learn, but they also get a chance to practice what they've learned with the many practice questions.
