I really liked this book
Overall, I really liked this book. It is as the author says, early on in it, that it's more about his experiences with the people along the way and not so much about Jethro the mule and walking with him. I like his experiences with the history of the area and makes me continue to long to hike the whole Coast to Coast. I've been on bits of it, but never the whole thing.Could have done without some of the courser language...it didn't really add a thing to the book, but thankfully, there wasn't too much of it.All in all, a worthwhile read.

Five Stars
Interesting and a unique variation on a well known walk across the north.

A thoroughly enjoyable book.
Hugh Thomson's writing style rolls along with the ups and downs of his journey with his travelling companion Jasper, and Jethro the mule' and the uplands and lowlands of the route. He describes a whole raft of people he meets on the way; the conversations he has, customs and interesting features of the locality with humour and engagement. But his prose becomes more colourful and poetic when walking alone and communing with the landscape and nature.

In places this is an excellent book telling some good anecdotes and information
I bought this after reading a review in a newspaper. In places this is an excellent book telling some good anecdotes and information. In other parts it drags and becomes slow.

Quirky, intelligent, enjoyable.
As with Hugh Thomson's other books (this is my fourth) I enjoyed his quirky, off-the-wall attitude. It's a compelling read, combining vivid descriptions of the characters he meets on his journey, with fascinating insight into the history of the landscape, and useful tips should you ever need to persuade a mule to do something that was not its' idea in the first place. Enjoyable reading, without being 'lightweight'. He's an intelligent writer, I learn a lot from his books that I didn't realise I should know.

An Okay Read
An okay read. If I had taken notice of a lot of reviews I wouldn't have bought it. I wish that had been the case! I had hoped the book would be about the journey, the countryside and the mule. Unfortunately it wasn't - instead the comments and views of Hugh Thomson were the main feature.
