Hectoring and unpleasant - not a light hearted read.
I bought this on the basis of a recommendation. What a waste of nearly £8.00First of all, in chapter one, I really did not like the hectoring tone, of being told how I might possibly be thinking (as it happens, I wasn't thinking the way the author assumed) and if so, to take a look at my prejudices. Now taking a look at one's prejudices is not in itself a bad thing at all, but I wasn't looking for a patronising and condescending lecture, but a light-hearted, fun read.Perhaps the author was trying to be amusing, I wouldn't know, as it came across very poorly to be lectured at twice in the first chapter.I was also bored by the writing, the main character had little to recommend her. Self satisfied and self-absorbed. Another reviewer on here described her as a "Karen". I agree.I really cannot recommend this book to anyone. Just awful. I did not finish it, in fact I didn't even come close to finishing it.

This is the BEST witchy book I've read in a long time.
I devoured this book in a couple of days. It was addicting! Love it for anyone who loves fall/ witchy vibes/ small town vibes.

Enjoyed, looking forward to more
I enjoyed this book. I read it for “spooky season” reading. The characters were fun and the plot was good. I feel they pushed a little too heavily on the feminism in this one however. Overall, it was good. I’ve read the sequel also and it was just as good. I like how each one is from a different character’s POV. It adds more depth to the books.

I liked the story overall
The beginning of the story really hit for me. There was some great world building along with great suspense and mystery, and that suspense and mystery really drew me into the story. My eyes kept glued onto the pages because I was very intrigued all the secrets surrounding Emerson. It kept me on the edge of my seat. I wanted to know more and more as the story continued. It felt really action packed as reveal after reveal came. It was a really good start. Then the whole romance between Emerson and Jacob that was teased was finally happening. I loved that they were soul mates, which made their magic more powerful. When they were together, it was really, really good. Plus I liked them together. I did wish there was a little more romance, but it still a solid romance. It started to drag a little bit after a certain point. There was just more them sitting around talking about things that were going to happen than them either finding new information or just action sequences. Until the climax finally hit, I was a little bit bored.Another thing that bothered me was Emerson herself. There quite a few moments that she annoyed the crap out me. I wanted to shake her sometimes because some of things she was doing especially with Jacob just wasn’t cool. She wasn’t my favorite heroine I will say that.

I've been mislead
Not what I imagined, and I am disappointed. I am not a fan of the fantasy aspects of the novel, which I did not see the label "fantasy" anywhere in any summaries/reviews. I am also confused as to why this was recommended to me as a fall read when it takes place in the spring in Missouri.I also find Emerson is not relatable when she "mutters" to herself out loud, and "fist-pumps" in the air on a regular basis. Maybe I'm the weirdo - but I don't do these things, nor do I find them charming.I was looking for a light-hearted autumn read with just a pinch of magic in it. This book misses the mark.I would save your money on this one.

Good story, slow at times
I read this as an editor's pick from Kindle and it was Kindle Unlimited. I thought the overall story was good. There was a lot of inner monologue which was too much at times. The women's empowerment messaging was positive but sometimes over the top and changed my perception of the scene. I felt it was a little preachy. I read a lot of paranormal stories. The main character was likeable as her story showed her evolution to embrace her full identity. I liked her trust of her friends and their dedication to her.
