Small combo, but great performance
I grew up on Broadway musicals, and this was a great reminder of how good the music was.

A clear Jazz rendition of a celebrated show's tunes.
An excellent performance by superb musicians of several tunes from this timeless show. Andre Previn on piano leads the trio comprised of Shelley Manne on Drums and LeRoy Vinnegar on Bass. I particularly enjoyed the selections and the dynamic interpretations. This CD should be in the collection of all knowledgeable Jazz followers.

Somewhat Disappointed
I think this album is not as good as it could have been, even by the standards of its era. Where is "The Rain In Spain"? The version of "With a Little Bit of Luck" is not the one I thought it was. I was not aware of how Andre Previn collaborated with Shelly Manne on a whole series of albums beginning with this one. It would be interesting to know how jazz critics view it after more than fifty years.

This is a real jazz classic, recorded in 1956 with Shelly Manne, Andre Previn, and Leroy Vinnegar. The group could not be tighter, with Previn leading the way. It's only a trio, but the approach to each song is fresh and on target. Also recommended: "Chet Baker Plays the Best of Lerner and Loewe"

Pleasant listening
A nice easy listening CD, not the greatest piano jazz, but pleasant. Love the cover art.

Playing All The Right Notes in the Right Order
Superb music frrom Shelly Manne and his group which includes a young, pre-classical musician Andre Previn on jazz piano, recorded in 1956. He and Shelly shine with eight songs from the famed musical! Recommended!

Priceless!
My wife knew this record from the fifties, and had often mentioned wishing she could find it again. But she'd always thought of it as André Previn's jazz version, and forgotten it was made in the name of the the older, more established Shelly Manne. I eventually found it on Amazon and bought it as a surprise, just hoping it was what she remembered. It was! And for me a new and delightful experience. I knew all the tunes, of course, but had never imagined they could be so successfully dissociated from the musical and the voice, and given such dynamic, skillful and witty treatment. Previn's is the driving force, but Manne on drums and Leroy Vinegar on bass provide a perfect and essential backing. I'm no expert on modern jazz, but if you enjoy it at all, I can't imagine you not being bowled over by this one!

Brilliant!
I've known this album most of my life and I could only rescue one CD from my collection this is the one I'd choose.Even after all these years it sounds as fresh and brilliant as when I first owned the 12" LP.

Previn - the jazz artist
I just love this album and have listened to it countless times since getting it. It gets 4 stars instead of 5 merely because there is a noticeable hiss which I believe they could have done more to get rid of. The performances of all concerned on this collection of the best songs from "My Fair Lady" are well-nigh perfect. Shelly Mann's drums prove that he is at the top of the heap, Previn is a superb improviser. Highlights include "On the street where you live" and (my own favorite) "With a little bit of luck". Well worth the money.

I didn't realise how much I missed it.
I used to have this on vinyl donkey's years ago and loved it. Lent it to someone in the dim and distant and never seen again. One track from it suddenly popped into my mind recently for some reason and I just had to get it. It's even better than I remember! It's very hard to believe that it was first recorded back in 1956. Superb, no, stunning musicianship. How can just three people achieve so much! How many people realise just what a brilliant jazz pianist Andre Previn was (and maybe still is for all I know). It's not surprising to see it rated as one of the all time great modern jazz albums. If you like Oscar Peterson but would rather lose some of the decibels then this is definitly for you.
