Softer, basically a cloth-like material, not canvas.

Are the two bags zipped together with the zippers on the side or in the middle?

One becomes the top and the other becomes the bottom. That puts the zippers on the sides. On a single bag, the zipper runs along the side and bottom so you can unzip it, wash it, and dry it flat.
