Church and the Tribulation: A Biblical Examination of Posttribulationism

Long time pre-tribber. Began to question its "scriptural-ness." This nailed the coffin and addressed every question/verse.
Flawless presentation, explanation, and defense of the post-tribulation viewpoint (done entirely scripturally, mind you, not apart from Scripture). Superb exposing and refutation of the increasingly visibly flawed, yet wildly popular (In America), pre-trib view. The author's style is clear, scholarly, non-combative/non-political, and thoroughly sound and convincing exegesis. I was a dedicated pre-tribber for the past decade since I got saved, and did much reading and studying on it, but in the last few weeks I only then for the first time gave it a truly critical treatment, and only then gave a fair consideration to alternatives. I quickly realized the untenable nature of the entire pre-trib scheme and abandoned it, but didn't yet know whether pre-wrath, mid-trib, or post-trib was the most scripturally-supported position. I read up on pre-wrath and post-trib, and found pre-wrath to be subject to many of the same fatal shortcomings as pre-trib. I realized post-trib is the most scripturally supported and (contrary to what I had thought for the past ten years) the least problematic view, but certain questions/confusions remained regarding the implications for certain notions and particular verses. This book addresses all of them, and reveals the many, many fatal flaws of the pre-trib scheme of interpretation. It also briefly touches upon mid-trib and pre-wrath, but by far the bulk of the book is aimed at the pre-trib camp, and it deals a devastating, dare I say nigh irrefutable, blow to it. A must read for every Christian not entirely familiar with or not thoroughly convinced of the post-trib paradigm Scripture teaches.

Great point of view, sadly written to exclude the folks who would most benefit from reading and understanding
I agree with the author's point of view. He is well versed. I heartily disagree with his intentional employment of words and phrases that obviously are meant to target the book to theological intellectuals, and/or impress the readers with Robert Gundry's intellect and vocabulary. Robert Gundry obviously is brilliant and obviously honors and respects the word of God. But the whole point of the word of God is to minister to people, for their edification and information, and for the glory of God. If that is the case, then one must wonder about the rhyme or reason of someone intentionally using difficult, uncommon and oft-times unnecessary uber-intellectual words to explain something way more explainable in more easily understood language. If the purpose of the writing is to impress others with the author's vocabulary, then this is a fantastic book. If the purpose of the writing is to minister and explain and clarify biblical writings, then this book fails and suddenly the author presents himself as intentionally writing for other theologians only, excluding all others. That is disappointing, and sad. I would humbly suggest Mr. Gundry goes back and writes another version of the book, for mere mortals to read and understand. In doing that, somehow I think he'd be more in line with Rabbi Paul, who wrote and said all scripture was intended for all people all the time, and purposely wrote with the pen and heart of a minister rather than the pen and head of a theological intellectual out to impress other theological intellectuals. If the Kingdom of God is truly the Kingdom of God, what is anyone doing writing like this? The ministry of Jesus was to take the story and plan of God to the people, is it not?

Systematic bible based explanation of the post-tribulation rapture.
Robert Gundry explains the biblical basis for the belief in a post-tribulation rapture. This book is the most systematic and scholarly work I have ever read on the post-tribulation rapture. Not only does Professor Gundry make the post-tribulation rapture make perfect sense from a biblical perspective, he completely demolishes the pre-tribulation rapture teaching of the modern church age. After reading his book, I realized that the pre-tribulation rapture teaching completely distorted my understanding of the entire bible. Once I understood that Jesus Christ is returning AFTER the great tribulation, huge portions of the new testament AND old testament began to make perfect sense. If apocalyptic theology never seemed to make sense to you, or you had a nagging feeling something didn't seem right, read this book and you will realize it is not as difficult as some so called "bible scholars" make it appear, due to their distortion of the plain biblical text.

Pre-Post Tribulation, A BIBLICAL VIEW
I like this book, it is well written and deals with the subject matter in a balanced way.The whole issue of Pre or Post-Tribulation rapture has many arguements from both sides, and both sides claim that their views are well founded on scripture, this book is loaded with scripture and well presented arguements in favour of a Post-Tribulation rapture. However, some of the language will be differcult for those who want someting a little lighter to read. Don't get me wrong I like the book, so 4 stars, but you will need to be serious about understanding this whole issue if you purchase this book.Do I recommend it for someone wanting to really gain an understanding of the Post-Trib view. Yes, absolutely.

Worth the time and $$)
No matter where you fall on the pre, mid, post scale this is an excellent example of the post trib view. Also this view works very well with the amil view taught by Kim Riddlebarger and others. In America where most are pretrib without even understanding the church historically and globally does not hold to this. We owe it to the biblical authors and study of the bible to examine other well held views

Academic rigor
The author was a professor at Westmont College. He goes into the end times theories and shows why the only one that can be substantiated from Scripture and matches the early church fathers is the one that the second coming, resurrection, and meeting Jesus in the sky occurs at the immediate end of the great tribulation.

Clears up my questions
I have only completed about a third of the book, but have already had many questions I came to the book with answered. It is a well written book and completely (without being exhaustive)addresses the questions raised by pre/post tribulational positions. The author is writing to support the post-tribulational position, and does so masterfully.

I was recommended this particular book by a Reformed professor of the ...
This is the only book I have read by Robert H. Gundry. He has many other works. This is a highly technical work, which I first purchased in 2011. I was recommended this particular book by a Reformed professor of the Greek language when I was sore perplexed about the meaning of the original Greek words in the New Testament eschatological passages. Since reading Gundry's work I have discovered how the pre-tribulation scheme originated, and familiarised myself with the works of those most notable of Bible and Greek scholars S.P.Tregelles and B.W.Newton. I am currently re-reading and referring to it, and I would certainly highly recommend it to anyone who desires to have a better understanding of the 'mechanics' as it were of the coming great tribulation and how they fit in with the eschatology of our present age and the coming millennial kingdom. Gundry leaves no stone unturned (in my weak understanding, at least) regarding all salient aspects of the great tribulation and how they align with the Biblical post tribulation system. He analyses the pre-tribulation scheme and shows systematically from the Scriptures how this belief is not taught in Scripture. He has obviously spent much time and research into this publication; and unless one is unfairly prejudiced (or biased); it is impossible for the candid mind not to be convinced by this scholarly work. I have done much subsequent study from the Bible since reading this book, as well as reading many other notable works on this most controversial and divisive of Biblical topics. I have read, and often still refer to E.W.Bullinger's "Apocalypse". Bullinger was a hyper Dispensationalist and did much to discredit post-tribulationism, and I believe if we are to be "girt about with the truth" we must familiarise ourselves with an objective and thorough understanding of the opposing view, rather than seemingly only from a prejudiced 'partisan' position. I have learnt that many Christians believe only what they are taught, rather than "study" for themselves 2 Timothy 2.15.Please remember, I didn't want to believe in a pre-tribulation or a post tribulation rapture per se, I wanted the truth-"What saith the Scripture?" as the Saviour says "The truth shall make you free" John 8.32. I have no theological bias to protect.Thank you for reading, and may God bless your studies.

An in-depth defense of Post-Tribulationalism.
Gundry goes into a great deal of depth in examining the Bible's teaching on the Rapture. This is a far more sophisticated and analytical work than Ladd's 'Blessed Hope'. Gundry is unusual in that he puts Post-Tribulationalism into a Dispensational framework.

Careful, solidly Biblical defense of historic Post-Tribulation rapture
Gundry's book continues to be the most carefully written Biblical defense of a post-tribulation rapture out there. Gundry humbly, but clearly demonstrates why pre-tribulationism may be popular but that it cannot withstand a clear reading of Scripture - it has to manufacture concepts and stretch passages to say what they plainly do not say. For all who have wondered about eschatology this is a must read - if for nothing else than to get a balance.
