I thought the keyfob was dead and a new replacement was going to be over £300 ...
I inherited this key, and the former owner was not kind to it. He'd press it way too hard, and as a result, the buttons were not working correctly, the rubber was cracked and basically the key looked embarrassing. I started looking online for a new key and was horrified at the cost. It would almost be a write off of the 10 year old Skoda Citigo. So then I found this and thought "why not give it a go - what could possibly go wrong?" And actually, not a lot did go wrong and the new fob is fantastic, but you do need to be one of those handy-people before having a go at this as you could break the thing. I looked at a few YouTube videos before doing this, which was with hindsight very wise. The instructions that come with this fob are not perfect, and watching somebody else do it was very useful. Now the first step is getting the old key apart, and basically you are going to come close to destroying it. So make sure you want to do this. The first bit is easy, take out the old battery. Then there is the problem of a silver pin that locks everything together, and you basically knock it into the main body of the key by hitting it with a pointy nail or similar. Once its inside, you can start to seperate the two parts of the keyfob. There is no going back at this point. Once you seperate the two halves, the spring that shoots the key out fly off and you'll be looking for bits. A tip on line I saw after I'd exploded mine suggested doing this bit inside a bag to catch everything. Another YouTube tip not in the instructions was how to remove key ... which then allows you to use a neater way of popping the two halves apart. Inside there is a simple circuit board. You transplant this across ... but then discover the new key also needs to be popped open. This time the bag trick worked - all pieces were contained. Re-assembly ... the only tricky bit is winding up the new spring so it flicks out nicely. Again, best seen on a YouTube video. So, overall - really chuffed with the end result. See the before and after photo ... however it could so easily have gone wrong.

Ideal replacement fob shell
My old key fob had worn out on the keypress areas. This is an exact replica and looks like new. The only difficulty I had was removing the old shell, there is a pin which the instructions say to tap into the old shell, but it didn't go in deep enough to allow the old shell to be split open. As I was disposing of the old shell, a hammer and chisel did the trick on forcing it open. Once I had removed the circuit board, it was easy to fit into the new shell. No re-programming required.

Not compatible with VW blade
If you plan to swap the original VW key blade into the new key blank then be warned. The VW blade is too big to fit into the blade hole on the new key blank. However, if you can cut down the original blade, or find a friendly local key cutter willing to cut the key pattern onto the new blade, then this is an excellent replacement for the original. Our local key cutter said the blade on this replacement is good quality and better than many he has seen from eBay.

Terrible instructions. Terrible fitting.
It was not fit for purpose. I have managed to use the dummy key and put it back in my old casing. The rest was of no use for my volkswagon.

Good quality product
Good replacement, including instructions and essential pin for reassembly. I transferred the original vw key and had to punch out the pin in the key blank to remove and file the original key tang down to fit, but not too difficult and all good in the end. Saved me a lot of money, good product.
