The content is there but ...
I bought this book to study for the 70-484. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because, while all the content seems to be there, I found it hard to follow at times. The author will present a topic in a broad overview, and then go into a little more detail, and then go back to cover the topic in even more detail. An example of this is the MVVM where he describes what it is, then he elaborates on the model, view-model, and model, then discusses the interaction between the model and view-model with datacontracts before going back to discuss the model in more detail. Another example is Chapter 2 where 2.1 is a general overview of contracts, 2.2 is about charms and contracts and 2.3, 2.4, and 2.5 are about specific charm contracts. It looks like there has been some stuff added and changed to the test with Windows 8.1 and Visual Studio 2013. Hopefully this causes a revision of the book and the flow can be improved.

This is overall a good book. It did cover enough of the material that it did help pass the exam. I am not sure it would be great for people with little experience. For me it really helped me think about the topics ahead of time and what was going to be covered on the exam. Worth reading as part of the preparation.

A flawed study guide.
Littered with small errors. Check out listing 2-23. The using directive implies that the ApplicationData class resides in the Windows.UI.Storage namespace. There is no such namespace. The actual namespace is Windows.Storage. This might seem like a minor error, and it is, but the book is packed with small mistakes just like this one. In sum, these glitches and typos render the book a frustrating exercise in patience. Unfortunately, this might be as good as it gets in regards to preparing for 70-484.

A Study Guide
A nice outline for studying, but you won't learn what it takes to pass the exam from this book. However, the book doesn't pretend to be anything more than an outline.

Maybe an example as to how NOT to write a programming book
One of the worst programming books ever written.

A good foundation on the subject.
I enjoyed reading this book. As the title suggests, it gives you a good base to draw from when making windows store apps using C#. Topic coverage is good. The book is well structured. Most importantly, I did well on the exam using this book in combination with the MVA lectures, as preparation. This was back in 2013 when the exam was not yet adapted to windows 8.1I'm giving it 4 stars because as the previous reviewer stated, there are a few moments where this book is a little hard to follow (XAML code, for example). Overal a great read I can definitely recommend.

A good reference to prepare you for the exam - beware of the old content
This book was a good reference for passing the 70-484 exam up until 19 Nov 2013. If you have experience writing Windows Store applications then reading and understanding this book should have you ready for the exam. There is one warning though. This book covers Windows 8 and as of 19 Nov 2013 this exam and 70-485 both have additional questions for 8.1 development. Its a shame it took Microsoft so long to get these books out, as they now need updating. That said Microsoft do provide plenty of detail online for the new features, so just be careful to study those as well.

Libro ottimo
