Despite cranking out quite a few great films, the Australian film scene was barely recognized ...
A bona ride CLASSIC, which retains its status as such. Quite frankly, I am a bit suspicious about the number of one and two star ratings this film has, along with the three or four word “review” attached. A bombastic performance from Gibson, whose pending SUSPERSTAR status was clearly on display in his first major film role, combined with incredible action sequences and a straight-forward revenge plot that will have you glued to your seat and cheering aloud when the mighty fist of vengeance is struck hard and squarely in the faces of those who murdered his family. As far as people complaining about the supposed lack of a plot, I wonder about which film you are referring to, as I don’t think the plot could be any more straight forward. Despite cranking out quite a few great films, the Australian film scene was barely recognized before this film came along and shook the foundation of Hollywood, as well as the low budget indie scene so hard, it put Australia on the map and helped to raise the profile of the country and its movie output for years afterward. A worthy purchase and an excellent way to spend a few hours.

Mechanized Mayhem
The 1st time I saw this movie, was at a screening at a theater near Penn University in Philadelphia. The film was shown with the original "Australian English" soundtrack, and I could barely understand half of what was said in the movie. The accents were so thick, as was the use of colloquial terms, that I was thought I was watching a foreign movie - which I was ! Don't get me wrong-the film was spectacular, but I felt like I had the experience of watching a British film with all the principles speaking in thick Cockney accents. From what I've read, from different critics, the Americanized audio version in plain ol' USA English and in mono is pooh-poohed as being vastly inferior to the original 5.1 Australian English version. I'm just glad It's included as an alternate audio track for those dunderheads like me, who aren't internationally gifted at multiple tongues!Thank you, Shout Factory !

Very dated, but maybe has importance in film history
This is full of tremendously bad 1980s-style overacting, but it was made in 1979. So maybe it inspired a lot of the films that followed. It's meant to be gritty, but you feel the director and writer haven't actually met up with any real grit in their lives. The overacting thankfully has not survived in modern films, but the post-apocalyptic look of this film endures in modern P-A films. The background music often made me think of West Side Story, specifically the background music for the gang-fight dance scenes. So, you get the feeling none of it is meant to be taken literally and that it is supposed to have some deeper meaning. Also includes lots of chases and crashes, they must have used up a lot of vehicles in filming this. The odd sex scene, plus implied sexual violence.Well, I'm looking forward to seeing the next film in the franchise. Maybe I'll make through all four of them, eh? The last one is supposed to be the best.

A masterpiece of modern cinima
I used to be able to quote this film line for line. I AM THE KNIGHTRIDER, I'm a fuel injected suicide machine, ask the toecutter he knows lol. What's not to love about this film? It's just worth mentioning that this one does have little in common with it's three sequels, in case you've just discovered the latest instalment, as this one has an almost contemporary setting. But it's still a great origin story with Mel Gibson giving a star making turn. The car chases are still fantastic, but for me it has always been the dialogue. So see ya later Goose (taps the back of his neck to goad Jim Goose)

Includes the American dubbed and Original Australian versions
After seeing Mad Max: Fury Road in cinema I had to buy the originals and I'm not dissapointed at all, for some reason this version is automatically set to the terrible American dubbed version so make sure you select the Original Australian Dialouge in the language selection before watching the film or you will have to sit through 93 minutes of terribly dubbed campy accents and the main bad guy with a British voice haha typical Americans. Overall fantastic film and highly recommended.

Disappointed.
A classic movie ruined by absolutely dreadful over dubbing with U.S. accents.

High speed road movie that changed cinema
High speed chases, open endless roads and nomad bikers in a post-apocalyptic vision of the future. Mel Gibson is Max, a police/highway patrolman who is determined to live his life clean and rid the roads of the scum that terrorise them. Events transpire that catapult him into another world, another outlook and new way of doing his job. A great film that looks as good as it sounds. Still modern and still plenty to admire. The film 'Saw' has a lot to thank this film for..!
