This piece of equipment is one of my best investments. It arrived on time. It is lightweight with a green smooth plastic head encasing the meter which reads “dry”, “moist”, and “wet”. Attached to this plastic headpiece piece, is a smooth metal pick designed to be pushed through the soil. The moisture content can be read at various levels in the soil.The device arrived with clear instructions for how to use it. In what I considered to be a bonus, it listed categories of plants and what the meter should read if the plant was adequately watered. You just stick it into the soil and almost instantly you have a reading on a meter of the amount of moisture in the soil at that level. I stick it in and give it a second for the reading to stabilize. Also, it came in a slender box with a cleaning cloth in the bottom compartment. The box could be opened from both ends. After wiping the tip clean, the device’s pointed bottom end can be tucked through a “fit to size” hole in the horizontal partition about halfway down the inside of the box.I have a brown thumb, but with this handy gadget, my ferns are thriving! I had been overwatering before I ordered this.

I got this to help prevent root rot in my plants. I wish the probe was skinnier. I have a hard time getting it in my plants without hitting roots. Also, if you use a chunky soil, this is not going to give you accurate results because there's a lot of air in the chunky mixes. Be sure to check multiple different spots in your plants since the middle of the pot is obviously going to be wetter than the outer edges. But like I said.. it is hard to get this thing through one spot, let alone a few different spots. Overall, it does work with the proper plants/soil. I went back to the finger test. 🤷🏼‍♀️

This was a waste of money. It never accurately measured soil moisture levels. A plant with soil so dry it was visibly cracked, but this meter would read damp. Soil that was clearly soaking wet read damp. I stuck it in a bucket of water to test it, and possibly recalibrate. A bucket of water was "damp".I know it was fairly cheap so I wasn't bothered by the meter display not being digital, but this meter would keep wiggling back and forth so I really couldn't get an exact reading. The instructions were basically stick in the soil, then look at the box to see where your plant fell. The issue is that it didn't explain how deep to insert it, in the middle or closer to the edges, etc. If you don't insert a reader correctly you may think your soil is too dry and over water or too wet and not water.There may be better, even accurate, soil moisture readers but I'm not even going to bother. I kind of assume they will all be like this.

This is a very helpful tool to add to your plant care arsenal. There were a few plants I had that I just couldn't tell what was going on with their water situation. Turns out some would feel dry at the top and be wet at the bottom. So this tool helps you by being able to see how dry a plant is before rewatering. It will save you drowning your house plants.
