Aldes 10" Backdraft Damper - BDD10

We had a new range hood installed with a new outdoor vent. Last winter we noticed a strong draft in the winter around the range and realized the HVAC contractor never put a damper in the vent. I purchased this was able to install it - I had to do some minor adjustments but I got it into the vent. I tested it and the vent readily opened on the lowest fan setting and was stable at the highest fan setting.This year there is no draft around the range and it shows up in our heating bill. Very satisfied, it does the job at a reasonable cost.

I purchased the 6 inch model which apparently is no longer available, and was much less expensive (about $35). It does not look like the ones that are pictured. It has one outside rubber seal, and two small springs wrapped around a central shaft. This damper can be installed so that the exhaust flows upward or horizontally, but not down. If the exhaust is flowing down, the two springs are too weak to close the metal flaps. Due to the location of my bathroom fan, I had no other option but to install the damper facing down. But the flaps would not seal completely. If the manufacturer provided a spare spring, the problem could be solved. I ended up having to remove one spring and rotating it one more revolution around the shaft to fix the problem. It was extremely difficult to do, and I don't recommend you do this unless you have lots of patience and plenty of time!This damper comes with a sponge rubber (similar to weather stripping) wrapped around the outside. It has an adhesive backing. I had to use a hair drier to remove the rubber so that it would fit inside the duct. I then clamped the damper to the duct using a metal screw-type clamp.Except for these modifications, the damper worked fine.Note, I would not recommend this product at its current $70 price.

We want as air-tight a house as possible, so we thought a lot about back-flow dampers. For the very large opening required by our range-hood blower, there weren't many options, and Aldes seems to have the best. It arrived quickly and the packaging was fine. But I had to adjust the gaskets, and add additional weather stripping to get a really good seal. So, not perfect out of the box, but you can retrofit it so that the heavy duty metal parts and spring can do their thing, and keep that cold air out of your house.

I replaced a damper that my builder used, and the quality difference between my original and this is amazing. Very impressed. Easy to install and instantly stopped backdrafts during strong winds. The weather stripping makes for a very tight fit, so I had to take the duct segment down to make the install easier. Weather stripping breaks down over the years so I put sheet metal screws in to make it worry free a bit longer.

I bought this one, and another one of the same size that was less than half the price. There's a noticeable difference in quality. The cheap one warped and broke easily during installation. This one went into the same location and is working fine.

This is damper is the way to go....period. I bought a 6" damper and it slid in the duct work and sealed off very very good. Damper did not reduce flow at all. No need to modify duct on an existing installation. Worked out great. Don't mess with the other ones you have to modify duct if your job is an existing installation. The damper on the new microwave was not preventing cold air back into the kitchen at all. I have since seen a night and day difference. Excellent item.

This has a really great design. Prefect for retrofitting into my vent. I was able to install from outside by simply removing the vent cap and inserting this damper into the vent tubing. No detectable draft now even when the temperatureoutside is near 0.
