Edward was born a prince in 1003. His parents were King Ethelred II and Queen Emma. When Ethelred lost his throne, Edward and his brother, Alfred, were sent to Denmark to be killed, but their lives were spared and they were sent to Normandy until they could return to England to regain the crown. Alfred died in 1035, and Edward became king of England by popular acclaim in 1042. He was a just and generous ruler and a religious man who helped the poor and repealed unjust taxes. He married at the request of his people, but reportedly he and his queen lived together chastely.
