The first 30 pages are very interesting
Too long. He makes his point in the first 30 pages. Mr. McWhorter is an excellent writer, exceedingly knowledgable, a consummate linguist, and highly articulate. Please re-read my first sentence.

Black English is a language
This examination of the roots, development, and structure of black English is fascinating, informative and very very useful in the adjustment of the view of how and where and why it is used. Highly recommended. Actually all of his books are worth a read

beautifully written. but typos?!?!
well-argued, thoughtful book. it made me wish i could see prof. mcwhorter work out his arguments live and ask questions. it engaged me to a rare depth. i dinged the star rating by one because i found two typos in a book about language and linguistics.

Interesting take
I'm not a linguist, but a lover of communication. The international examples of informal vs formal speech and intimate speech vs professional speech make clear that Black English isn't bad English. It's different.

Well written, congenial account of black language in the ...
Well written, congenial account of black language in the US. I can honestly say I'm convinced that Black English is it's own, fully developed language. McWhorter is an unapologetic, clean writer with a passionate lot to say about linguists and their impact on the racist views of black language in this country. Not my first recommendation unless you are interested in linguistics.

Destroying Bogus Linguistic Stereotypes About African American Speech/Communication
Deep wisdom for understanding and observing communication patterns with African Americans who embrace indigenous ways of speaking as adaptations to their social experiences in the United States. Black talk is not inferior to standard English. It is just different.
