EllRay Jakes the Recess King!

My son's favorite book series and this says a lot because he is not an avid reader! Its like pulling teeth to get him to read! Storylines are very entertaining, even for adults and the material is culturally relevant. Its nice to have a character that my son can relate to and looks like him!

I'm trying to increase reading fluency with my girls and boys and these will help in providing great little chapter books for my students to read and relate to EllRay and other characters that look like them and hopefully increase comprehension as well.

My LO has been an advanced reader. We purchased one of these when he was in 2nd grade, and have been hooked on the series since.

My 7yr son was ready for a chapter book and we’re so glad we found this one. Recess King is funny & captivating. The chapters are the perfect length and the story is totally relatable (especially since he has a younger sister just like Ellray). We will definitely be buying more of the series.

I am determined to encourage reading, in particular supporting and promoting African-American literature for our kiddos given the limits of this literature in DFW suburban schools. Ordered several in this series for my 5 year old boy, however, only one of the books The Recess King (Inadvertently ordered two of the Recess King installment) was really appropriate for our 5 year old. I was expecting a more picture book, and these are more chapter books with some B&W pictures. May be appropriate for an advanced 5 year old that really is a fan of reading, but was more advanced for our 5 year old. I decided to give all the others to the nearly 9 year old boy. Which he is on the cusp of being too old for, but nevertheless he has enjoyed them so far.

My son is 7 and being a little black boy sometimes he doesn't always like the books that are chosen for them to read in school. They rarely cater to his demographic and he loses interest fast. So I ordered this book to see how he would like it and he really enjoyed it. I will order more of these for him.

This was a great story and perfect for our first foray into chapter books for our 1st grader. We will definitely seek out more books from the Ellray Jake's series.
