Almond Dream Bites
Full disclosure: I don't drink almond milk, or rice milk, or any such similar product. My mother, however, is lactose-intolerant, so she's been buying the Dream's brand, Rice Dream rice milk, for years. As such, she trusts the Dream brand to deliver quality dairy-free products, and I never would have questioned their quality were it not for a recent purchase of Almond Dream Bites, mini chocolate-covered "ice cream" bites. They were quite tasty, however both of us thought it was odd that the label proudly proclaimed them to be "gluten-free!" Since when does an "ice-cream" treat contain gluten, anyhoo? But seeing as how she's also allergic to gluten, she figured it was just an added bonus.Although the product was labeled as "gluten-free," I thought it was rather odd that nowhere on the label did it say it was dairy-free. Being Almond Dream, one would assume it was dairy-free, of course, but I just thought it was weird that it didn't seem to say it anywhere. This raised my curiosity, so I read the ingredients. I had to scan them twice before noticing the little symbol near the ingredient, "unsweetened chocolate." Upon finally locating the additional product information in tiny weeny print, I was surprised and chagrined to read, "unsweetened chocolate contains milk, and therefore this product isn't suitable for people with dairy allergies." I don't have the carton handy so those may not be the exact words, but that was the statement regardless.I was floored. How SLEAZY can you get??? Folks rely on the Dream brand to avoid allergens. Dream deliberately manufactures a product containing milk, and then tries to disguise that fact with fine print, and a proclamation of "gluten-free!" to serve as a deflection. I mean, that's just sooooo wrong! This isn't a case of, "may be produced in a facility that manufactures nuts, soy, dairy..." etc. This is an actual ingredient containing milk, in an ostensibly dairy-free product. For shame! It's a sad day when you can't even trust the good guys anymore. I know that many companies use the "organic" label to market to an ever-growing pool of potential customers, and exploit loopholes in order to do so. A consumer has to be extremely vigilant in separating out the reputable, health-conscious companies from those who are merely seeking to capitalize on a market based on people's health issues, and profit from them. I know this practice is far and wide, I just never "dreamed" that the Dream company was one of them. There are plenty of non-milk alternatives for chocolate ingredients including, but not limited to, coconut milk and plant-based oils. I would strongly encourage the Dream company to look into these, and in the meanwhile to modify the label for Almond Dream Bites and other such milk-containing products to declare prominently on the label that these products contain dairy. I would hope that their business ethics would dictate that they do the right thing. But then again, it appears that they don't have any such ethics, or they would have done so already.I will be boycotting any Dream products from here on out, and encouraging my family and friends to do the same. The amount of milk in the "unsweetened chocolate" may be miniscule, but it is still present. This affects not only people with allergies, but those of us who are trying to avoid animal cruelty as best we can. To have a trusted company betray that trust is....well....you know. F*** them. There are other, more conscientious, brands to choose from, and more on the way. Onward and upward!
