Eclogues. Georgics. Aeneid, Books 1–6 (Loeb Classical Library)

The Loeb Classical Library is always excellent. It's a shame that the second half of the Aeneid had to be relegated to a second volume with the probably-spurious Appendix Vergiliana. The volumes could have been redistributed with the Aeneid in one volume and the Eclogues and Georgics with the appendix in the other, but it is nice to have the majority of the poet's work collected in a single volume.

Don't get me wrong, the translation is fine, but if you're looking for a verse translation of the Eclogues, the Georgics, or the Aeneid, look elsewhere. Unfortunately, I had to purchase the item without knowing whether it was verse or prose, since none of the reviews indicates that it is, in fact, prose. I suppose I can't have too much Virgil, but it's nice to know ahead of time, right? Well, now all the other people in the world looking for a verse translation of Virgil's works (all twenty of them, right?) will know that this isn't what they want.

A very helpful, almost a necessity, for any serious student of Virgil. The condition of the book was excellent.

Virgil's work obviously has lasting worth. This is a good translation.

Book cane today ripped and discolored. VERY disappointing since it’s a Christmas gift and with 10 days left I won’t have time to return it!

Without a doubt my top pick for the best Virgil out there

Some Loebs have very old English translations, but this one is fairly modern. It does at times stay a little far from the Latin to be a close crib for students, as it tries to be literary, but it is still very useful.

This Loeb edition is undoubtedly the best - especially for those of us who occasionally need a crib! Beautifully produced, long-wearing, and clearly printed with unexceptionable translation side by side with the Latin - the latter obviously being the most important ingredient. The first six books of the Aeneid are a bonus following upon the Eclogues and Georgics. Truly a Vergilian feast at an affordable price.

Very useful but rather stilted translation

Excellent edition, very clear type and easy to read in Latin. Useful English translation which is faithful to the original text.

I really like Virgil’s Georgics and Eclogues also this goes along nicely with my other LOEB texts like De Oratore.
