4th grade level reading
I purchased this for my 9 year old granddaughter because her teacher recommended it. She is loving the story. She never liked to read, but now she can’t wait to get to the end of the book.

Quick, easy read
My 8yr old son enjoyed this book. He’s learning about early American history, settlers, Indians, early American state geography, and how people lived. This hit many of those areas in easy to read and easy to comprehend language. The sporadic illustrations were just enough to keep the visual going. Highly recommend this book for readers getting into chapter books.

High quality writing and moral character
My child read this book in less than an hour after it arrived. She really loved it and so do I. I'm currently reading it aloud to our othet children. Wonderful additional resource for our homeschool library of books with high quality writing and building moral character.

A Sweet Little Story
My nine year old son loved this story. It is a sweet little book with a simple kind message. There is some language used that would not be permitted on today’s environment; however, this language opens up an opportunity for nuanced discussion and better understanding of society’s growth and changes. I highly recommend this book.

Be prepared to balance with facts about Native Americans
This is a respected piece of children’s literature because of its award status. However, parents and teacher must have be prepared to have serious conversations about the portrayal of Native Americans and the true role of white settlers as usurpers of indigenous lands. It took a few weeks with more indigenous-positive literature and visiting indigenous sites to rebalance some mistaken impressions from this book.

Interesting but needs reading alongside an adult
This is a lovely book and read at a different time I would have maybe given it more stars. However, time has not served it well. The attitudes between pioneers and the American Indians (here just called Indians) would be very interesting to discuss and explore one-to-one at home but I would tend not to have the book in school unless being read by an adult.

It was an easy read and kept her attention throughout the whole novel
Had to buy this book for my 10-year-old daughter's homeschool program reading requirement. She wasn't looking forward to reading it. The cover doesn't do the book justice. It was an easy read and kept her attention throughout the whole novel.
