Meditations

Stoicism Explained
This book has three major functions: to be the personal journal of the Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, to clarify to non-Stoics what it means to be Stoic (not stoic), and to serve as a time if advice in a plethora if topics to other Stoics, and although Marcus Aurelius never meant it to be anything more than a journal, this book excels at all three functions.Marcus Aurelius was an great emperor and a greater man. He was known for his justice and humble ability to learn from others, including subordinates. This book, as the journal of the most powerful man on earth at the time, serves as a great study guide into law, ethics, philosophy, ancient civilization, ancient history, politics, and Roman history.Second, this book clarifies our misunderstanding of Stoicism. Stoicism is NOT the teaching that emotions are bad. It was quite different. Stoicism taught that bad emotions were human nature and should be controlled and restrained, while good emotions should be chased, studied, and improved. As a master practitioner of Stoicism, Meditations serves as a great argument for the practical usefulness of Stoicism. Finally, this book helps novice Stoics improve their nature and skills. A major theme in Stoicism is to find a master Stoic and emulate him as a role model. Few Stoics would serve as a greater role model than Marcus Aurelius. This book is a must-have for any book shelf, and I hope you buy it, because I know every intellectual will thoroughly enjoy reading Meditations.

Historic yet an Easy Read
Great gift for history nerds and deep thinkers like myself. I also started giving it as a college graduation gift. As a high School grad gift. I used to give "A Peoples History of the United States" (because nothing kids love more after 12 years of school than to get a long, dry book) I would include a note about "learning never stops, maybe check this out later if not sooner, just say know, etc. - I switched it up to giving "Lies My Teacher Told Me" instead, with the same note. "Meditations" is a lot shorter but also important.

It's not a paper weight. The book is pretty thin.
The book itself is only 87 pages, but, it is not a simple read. The use of the old style of writing is interesting. Not for a person who likes a simplistic style of writing. If you like long meditative reading this is wonderful. I totally recommend it.

So I really like this book and the Stoicism/philosophy or whatever behind it ...
So I really like this book and the Stoicism/philosophy or whatever behind it all, however the translation leaves a lot to be desired. I've started to just pick it up and edit it... I'm not really getting much ethically or morally or higher purpose whatnots that i was looking for at this point. Let me roll that back some because I'm sure many would read the book and be happy with the many messages within but I'm having some OCD issues I think...

Table of contents?
Firstly, This review concerns only the physical aspects of the book, it is not an arrogant ameture critique of a magisterial work of which has & will always continue to remain relevant (I can’t stand the latter).Text: The font is larger than what is commonly used so it’s very easy to read and stay focused visually. The cover is very nice and glossy and well made.Potential Con*Im not sure if the original had a Table of Contents* but the edition shown on the photo above does not have one. I appreciate translations of great works that honor the original. Therefore, If that’s how MARCUS intended it to be, than this edition is perfect especially considering the price

Wonderful Reading for a new Stoic
Whether you’re looking for a good read or just a refresher as it pertains to stoicism, this book offers an amazing range of work to put into practice. “Mediations” sets itself apart as a wonderful work of literature, and practice. This book will give you insight into so much which seemed so vague. The texts are easy to read and application of the lessons are just as simple. Definitely would recommend

Translation Trouble
If they want to convert something into English, then why can't they improvise. There's a lot of miss spelling, just when you read the good parts. Read to chapter 7 or BOOK 7 and tell me why doesn't the heading look like all the other headings. This is the best book I ever read, but don't publish a book if there's two HAD in one sentence or an unfinished word.

Great insights
Mu key issues are with the edition rather than the content. I don’t understand why the edition can’t replace “thy” with “yours”. It’s not the original text but a translation from Greek so they can change the vocab to make it less distracting. Also the book is needlessly long and awkward to hold.In terms of content I feel like it gives us great insight into Marcus’s mind and reflections. The key concept of the book is Logos which is the logic and set principle of the universe which means that everything that happens meant to happen so we most accept it with no emotions but rather as a set and stone fact. Marcus also highlights the 4 cardinal virtues and gives some insights into a good life. Overall satisfying read.

very small letters
this book needs no introduction, it was the personal diary of Markus Aurelius, but in this version very small letters have been used to save the pages and also high-level English has been used which makes it a little hard to understand and grasp the wisdom of this book( words like "thou" and "thee" ).
