Page-turning thriller of the 80s NY Drug Scene
This book was soooo good - I couldn't put it down! It goes inside the drug scene in NYC's Alphabet City and full of historical facts about the city "back in the day." Definitely worth a read.

East side west side
A fast paced and personal account, but this doesn't really get to the heart of how the drug dealing systems worked. The gritty realities of police life in the projects take centre stage and as noted, the personal experiences of the protagonist/author are certainly vivid. There are busts galore but somehow the bigger picture, and the biggest kingpins, seem elusive.A quick read but rather one dimensional.

Good, but...
This is a good book but the description is a little misleading. The book is billed as the story of an NYPD narcotics officer's hunt for an elusive drug lord. Davey Blue Eyes is a Keyser Söze type figure if you will who is running the Heroin trade in an area of New York, despite the fact that the police have no photos of him and he hardly registers on their radar. The author sets about shaking the tree, arresting low level crims, getting more and more info on Davey's gang and rattling his cage. All very promising and all very much like a true version of the Wire, with Davey Blue Eyes substituted for Avon Barksdale and the author, Micheal Cordella, playing the role of a real-life McNulty.Only, its not really about that. Don't get me wrong this story runs through the book, but mainly as a few introductory pages to each chapter. In fact until the final couple of chapters the bulk of the book is a biography of Cordella and his experiences from childhood, through joining the NYPD, through becoming detective, etc. While this is all very interesting this is not the book I thought that I was buying and I have to admit that I'm not sure if I would have purchased the book had I known that it was another police biography. That said, the book is well written, Cordella has some interesting insights, and the Davey Blue Eye's story when told is fascinating. I just wish that the book had been more in line with its description.
