Do they hold on formica?

I'm not 100% sure but I would think they would as long as item it's holding isn't super heavy, mine is still holding tight on window, hasn't slipped a bit, good luck!

Do they hold better if you lick them first, working up a good amount of spit?

Just a small amount of moisture will help these suction cups hold better. NOT a lot of spit is needed!!!

How wide is the actual hook part? Want to hang hair brushes. Thanks!

Just as it is pictured as a pretty thin wire. I don’t know if you could hang hair brushes from it or not. It would depend upon if there is a hole in the hair brush handle. It also needs to attach to either a mirror or a window as it does not suction to cabinets or anything like that
