It's a rugged Casio - takes daily abuse in my job and still looks at me asking what all the fuss is about. Keeps time perfectly, compass is brilliant, backlight bang on. A excellent timepiece - wluldnt expect anything less.

I love this watch, its a G Shock in all but name! Hugs the wrist well unlike some g shock squares which (for me anyway) are often between holes on the wrist so the watch can move slightly or is too tight. This is perfect. Looks good if you bear in mind it is intended for sports activities / walking. Would not look good with more formal clothing or even casual in some respects. Have yet to work out how to calibrate the compass (looks complicated). The features on this watch for the price are really good. Delivery was fairly quick from the US but Amazon do not adequately package these watches, just a paper bag, no bubble wrap or anything. As a result the box was damaged so its a good job the watch was not meant as a gift. Hence knocking off 1 star.

The best watch I’ve ever owned was the now rare and classic Casio TS100 from the 1990s, which had extensive functions including world time, five alarms, and a thermometer (with a unique wrist-wearing compensation mode). I went through three of those watches, which have now become collectors’ items. Unfortunately, I have never had a watch as good as the TS100 and have been on an unending quest since the early 2000s to find a Casio watch that measures up to the unsurpassable holy grail that is the TS100. Since the TS100 was discontinued, Casio have released watches offering various combinations of world time, thermometer, and compass, often combining features across different models. The AE-1000W was the starting point for a range of later “world time watches” which, while good, didn’t have many additional features. The SGW-500H had world time, a thermometer, sunrise and sunset times, and a compass. This was the watch many claimed was a worthy successor to the TS100, but unfortunately my experience with it wasn’t great. The compass needle would get stuck and the wrist strap broke after two months of moderate and careful use. The thermometer sensor in the SGW-500H was also woefully inaccurate compared to the TS100. So, after scouring discussion forums, reading multiple reviews, and watching online video reviews, I decided to give this watch a go, one I had previously overlooked. My review is as follows: First, the positive aspects: It’s rare in today’s oversaturated Casio watch market to find a non–G-Shock watch with this many features (although as will be explained in the negatives section, this features are mostly gimmicky). The range of features alone has made it particularly sought after. Second, the darker version (SGW-100-2B) is very appealing aesthetically and unlike most digital Casio watches. The combination of dark navy blue, orange, white, and black makes it visually interesting and it looks nice on the wrist. Third, the wrist strap is very comfortable, and seems to be reinforced near the springs which is a welcome change. We all know that Casio straps break all too easily, so at least some thought has gone in to prolonging the lifespan of the step. Negatives: the contrast and legibility of the time display on the darker version (SGW-100-2B) are absolutely atrocious. I can’t recommend the negative display version of the watch because it’s so difficult to read the time properly regardless of lighting conditions. Despite the large digits, the time is hard to read in both natural and artificial light, and even the backlight doesn’t help much. I would recommend purchasing the lighter version (SGW-100-1VEF) if you want to avoid eye strain or draining the battery from constant use of the backlight. Second, the thermometer is a bad gimmick. Believe me, I have calibrated, tested, measured, and recalibrated the temperature setting many times using multiple thermometers for comparison (both on and off the wrist). Unlike the TS100, which was usually within a 2-degree range of the actual temperature, this watch gives inaccurate readings that are all over the place, sometimes out by as much as four degrees, which renders the thermometer practically useless. It also lacks the wrist-compensation mode that the TS100 had for temperature readings. It absolutely baffles me that a Casio TS100 made in 1989 has a better and more accurate thermometer than this Casio watch made in 2010. Other reviewers have rightly commented on the limitations of the stopwatch timer, and this is a valid criticism for a watch in such a high price range (£60). There are cheaper Casio watches with better stopwatch functions than this. Casio are truly torchbearers for what Cory Doctorow calls “enshitification.” Instead of listening to their loyal fan base and delivering an innovative, excellent product, we are left with something that is functionally mediocre and objectively worse than the glorious predecessor it was based on. This watch, and all of its overpriced SGW variants, will never come close to the robust functionality of the TS100. As an ’80s child, I’ve always felt attached to Casio watches for nostalgic reasons, even when they haven’t quite met all my needs. At 43 years of age, I’ve never been without a Casio watch, but the disappointment I feel over this one could be the last straw that turns me away from Casio altogether. I wanted to like this watch so badly, but it just doesn’t measure up. The gimmicky and poor thermometer functionality does not justify such a high price. The compass is okay, but it barely displays on the screen for long enough for you to gauge the actual direction. I would have been willing to pay around £30 for a watch like this, but at twice that price it feels like a complete rip-off. The negatively display contrast for the darker version is horrendously bad, which negates the functionality of the watch and makes it less than practical to use for outdoor activities or situations like hiking where the watch might potentially be used. Quite how the negative display passed quality control is anyone’s guess. Last, but not least, a three battery life for a £60 watch is really unacceptable. All Casio watches in this price range should have a 10 year battery life as standard. I'll keep the watch as it will likely become a collectors item in future, but for those of us who have seen better features in other, much older Casio watches, this watch is big dissapointment. I am writing this review after using it for last 7 days.I received the watch in 12 days from dispatch date. It was sent through ARAMEX courier , seller is from California. This model is not available in India. The packaging of Casio group is not at all impressive. Only a stand to keep the watch covered in paper box. In India, Casio watch comes in either hardy plastic box and for G-Shock in metal case. So I really don't find it impressive as it is a imported product , coming from USA. Now, about the watch: 1. Looks quite hardy and rugged one. 2. Illuminator light is great, the dial lights up in deep green and digit lights up separately in light green which creates contrast. 3. Made in China (Not thailand make) 4. Band is resin but I don't think its long lasting...let's see in coming years. 5. Band buckle is plastic made and not hardy one , I thought it would be in metal/steel like other company's watch or like Casio G-shock comes in resin band but the buckle is steel. Even cheap watch of timex provides metal buckle in resin band. But this band comes with plastic buckle and I handle it carefully (like not to wear it tight as during removal from wrist the buckle may break if u pull hard) 6. Time is showing accurate.World time and other basic features are good. 7. Alarm sound is a bit low than other casio watch. Snooze alarm function works great specially in morning when you find it quite challenging for waking up. 8. Now lets talk about the main features of the watch i.e.Digital compass and Temperature sensor : a. Digital compass is quite accurate. I checked it with my mobile compass too. No calibration is required. Don't calibrate it as soon as u get the watch. Check first with mobile compass or any other compass before calibration. b. Temperature sensor shows the body temperature so as many people said in previous review, you have to keep your watch open for sometime,then you may get correct temperature. But I can suggest you to subtract 3 to 4 degrees to get correct temperature when you are wearing it. Though it depends person to person for different body temperature but 3 to 4 degree is general.difference from correct temperature. 9. It is 200 meter water resistant and it really is.You can dip it in bucket of water or get into swimming pool. But don't operate the watch/press button as long as you are in water or your hand is wet. 10. Overall it's a good buy...the watch looks quite good and am satisfied. 11. no warranty in India/or outside USA but that's not an issue. I am using casio watches for last 5 years and I can say it does not malfunction within 1 year. It may shows up some problem after 3 years.
