Dubliners: A Norton Critical Edition (Norton Critical Editions)

An Edition Worthy of These Stories
This book changed my life because it sat on my grandparents' shelf for years as one of our totems, an emblem of who we are and how important the messy, cathected cultural history of Ireland is to our family. And when I finally read it, Joyce does not idealize Dublin at all, and this frightened me. Furthermore, I think it was the first time I ever encountered a book that challenged me stylistically and interpretively, that was intended to be out of everyone's depth. A professor in undergrad once said I was "marvelously gifted reader of symbolism" (in the context of a disagreement about D.H. Lawrence) but Dubliners simply does not submit to any simple allegorical mappings. It is a text filled with aporias, and that is why I love it. Joyce is work. There are no easy answers. At eighteen, I said to myself, "This is what literature can be: a fantastic puzzle." And I've been hooked ever since.

My copy was in very good condition for a used book
My copy was in very good condition for a used book. The book itself is great quality- Norton Critical Editions provide excellent footnotes that are especially helpful for interpreting local Dublin slang. Note: The sexual content mentioned mostly is, like so much of the conflict in the Dubliners, implied. However, it would be false to suggest there is no sexual content.

Enjoyable and approachable with the depth befitting a literary master (not a 'light read')
"The Dead" may very well be the greatest short work of literature written in English, but I'm sure many people have said the same for many other works.Every story in the collection is worth the reading and re-reading.

Great Edition
This book was purchased for an English class, however I found the additional information added to each story incredibly interesting and helpful. If you don't know much about Dublin, this edition is for you.

incomplete
The book is divided into three sections. The first section consists of Joyce's original text. The second section, entitled "Contexts," contains photographs and maps of authentic locations mentioned by Joyce. It also contains poems and songs alluded to by Joyce. It also contains original versions of short stories which Joyce later revised. The third section contains literary criticism on stories in the collection. In the introduction, the editor tells us that the third section does not contain essays on all of the short stories. The editor cites lacks of space as the reason for this omission. What I don't understand is how the space is limited. Certainly War and Peace is thicker than this book.Speaking for myself, I'm not all that interested in where the landmarks are in Dublin. I would rather know what the literary critics say about "The Sisters," "An Encounter," "Two Gallants," "A Little Cloud," "Clay," "Ivy Day in the Committee Room," "A Mother," and "Grace."
