A sex-addicted French financier, a fateful hotel room encounter, and a scandal that would rock the world: the mighty Gérard Depardieu gives a fearless performance in this ripped-from-the-headlines saga of sin and sleaze from boundary-pushing director Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, Ms. 45). Inspired by one of the most high-profile public implosions in recent memory, WELCOME TO NEW YORK follows a prominent international banker (Depardieu) as he spirals out of control during a drug and sex-fueled trip to America culminating in a shocking incident involving a hotel maid and his subsequent arrest. Jacqueline Bisset co-stars in this provocative portrait of a man whose fall from grace sent shockwaves throughout the world.

Not What I Was Expecting...
I had seen the Room 2806 documentary, which I found interesting, so I decided to give this a watch. I was expecting a drama which touched on the highlights of the Dominque Stros-Kahn scandal. What I hadn't expected, was to find a docu-drama that had liberal dashes of very cheeky comedy. Stros-Kahn was a repulsive, ego maniacal French socialist who was a sex addict that ultimately raped a maid in a NYC hotel room. His wife had the money to get him off the legal hook, but this movie gradually depicts Stros-Kahn getting a well-deserved taste of his own medicine, while exposing the very disingenuous nature of a contemptuous sociopathic politician. The down sides were that the movie was too indulgent with the sex scenes (soft porn), and should have had some other scenes edited down (like when his wife is inspecting the rental apartment). Other than that, I thought the acting was great, and the narrative was quite entertaining.

I would recommend you see this at least once
Gerard and Jacqueline were exceptional together. The subject matter is a bit hard to watch .but the acting is superb. I would recommend you see this at least once. Not a pretty role but Gerard definitely captures the repulsive pathetic politician he so despises..Bravo

we see something very similar on Law and Order
Depardieu's wife wants him to become the president of France. all he wants is to do what he wants. what a narcissist. he has no feelings about anything, he tells a psychiatrist, that his wife makes him see. "no one wants help." he says he has an illness , that he is a sex addict and he definitely is that.

So So Disappointing
Though based on actual events, this movie had no cohesion; the court case with the maid took a back seat to nudity and sexual escapades. I've seen way more of GDP than I ever wanted to. It could have been an important movie but devolved into husband and wife arguing about whose entitled life was more wrecked with the husband taking the position that because he was a sex addict, that excused all his behaviors. Disappointing and nauseating.

I'm really not sure why this movie was panned by critics. I've watched 4 times now and find new things about it that are intriguing and entertainingThe performances are stellar. The music is off beat and intriguing. The psychology of the characters is fascinating. And guess what I watch it again.

Watch and listen.
Intelligent. Outstanding acting. Right amount of the salacious, but the important focus is on DSK and his wife and daughter and how life surprises.Little time spent on the legal resolution, which struck me as the correct treatment. Well worth your time and attention.

Better than reviews suggest
I would recommend this movie for only one small section - almost in the middle of the film- where the main character talks directly to us as he muses over his past motivations, ambitions and philosophy. This revealing insight into his character is brilliant and almost makes the viewer forgive his appalling behaviour up to that point.Jaqueline Bisset and Gerard Depardieu have their moments too- the argument in their rented New York apartment is brilliant acting and so intense one wonders if it was actually unscripted? The much talked about illustrations of the the lead characters sexual activities are almost boring and not at all erotic; well filmed with good use of angle and lighting so as not to offend - only there to set the scene for what follows.Could it have been better? Probably not, the story is a difficult one and I think the script made some important points regarding corruption of both our society and an individual who (according to him) actually had good intentions at the outset but was handicapped by his nature. Not one to rush out and buy but for the more philosophical, well worth the time.Naturally professional film reviewers wouldn't like it..

Welcome to New York. Poder, Poder, Poder.
