Love the mix-take concept on this book. I have been following Alicia on Instagram for a while now, and there is not one thing that she writes that doesn't make ya go "hmmm". She always hits you "right there", and this book is no different. Thought provoking words that just bring on all kinds of the feels and one many occasions I just found myself "damn, yes girl, yes". Truly creative in the artistry of the words as well as the concept. I raise my wine glass to her with my virtual fist bump.

Alicia's book is astoundingly unique and is so much more than just poetry. One of the first things I noticed when I picked up Alicia’s book was the layout. It was designed exactly like a mix tape. The first 50 pages being called, “side A” while the rest were titled “side B.” Side A was the poems and side B was the remixes of her poems. To compliment the mix-tape vibe she also adds at the bottom of each page the song she was listening to when she wrote it. I thought the layout was so unlike anything I had seen, and right away I knew I was going to love her book before even reading the words on the pages. The second thing I found amazing about her book was that all of the profits made from the book were going directly to, Willow Tree Center in New Jersey, for those struggling with addiction. I later discovered that this was because she wanted to honor of her cousin who died 10 years ago of a heroine overdose. Highly recommend this book for anyone interested in poetry.

I really like that she includes what she's listening to while writing. I'm one of those people who can go from listening to 2Pac to Birdy though, so maybe that's why I can appreciate being able to write a piece of poetry while listening to "In Da Club". Seeing that actually made me laugh out loud. I can definitely see how her work has evolved from this book to the stuff she currently posts on Instagram. I didn't love all of the poems, but there are some must-reads in the collection.

Alicia, where do I even begin with this work of art? I don't care who you are, you can't read this book of poetry, and not feel something deeply to your core. Her words move me in a way that no other artist has been able to do, and the voice that she has is something to be admired, and looked up to. "Stuff I've been feeling lately" is relatable, humanistic, and moving. The little additions she made to the book, such as the songs she was currently listening to, is what sets her apart from other writers. I can honestly say she has been one of the most influential people I have ever come across, and long story short, you will not be disappointed if you purchase this book. I loved how unique this book was. I have read a couple of modern poetry books but this may be one of my favorites to date. The “currently listening to” sections at the end of every poem made the poems all the more beautiful for me. As an avid music and book lover myself this was a perfect remix of stuff I’ve been feeling lately too (no pun intended). Yes, there were parts I didn’t fully understand because I may not have gone through the same things but every human experiences certain feelings in common so I love the book despite any incomprehensible moments for me. Blackout poetry is amazing as well so I loved how Alicia Cook incorporated this into her poems for side B. Her versions of the black out poems were so good, very apt to the poem and song themselves. Five stars and well worth the money for me!

I love music and I love poetry so this book is amazing, in theory. But the songs don't match the words at all and that is extremely disappointing. For example, there's a poem she wrote dedicated to the strong people in her life (awesome) but the song attached to it is "In Da Club" by 50 Cent. That, to me is just a little bit off putting. She should have put in a song that emphasizes the meaning and emotions of the poem it follows rather than distracting from it. The writing was okay though.

From the cover, you know this book is going to be a bit of a ride. But after you read the first piece you realize that the author has turned this book into her own mixtape, combining music with her words and her stories and really, her life. I dog eared too many pieces to list my favorites, but by the time I reached side b, I was already so in love with this book in its entirety. Insightful, interesting, and innovative, I have such respect and admiration for Cook. This book is truly unique and very much worth reading - at least twice.

Reading this... you feel understood... Finaly someone who put into words the feelings that leave you numb at times.. it makes you see life differently... for those who had to grief... this is good lecture too.! Same line as words whiskey and a shovel! Love it! Will definitly pay it foward and pass it on ☺

Un libro totalmente diferente, pero extraordinario.

Achei o livro bem diferente

Me gustó muchísimo el libro, aunque la segunda parte del libro sólo son otra forma de ver los poemas pero está muy lindo. Lo compré porque reconocí algunas de las canciones que menciona y me gustó el concepto.

Ein tolles Geschenk. Schöne Gedichte, und die B Sides sind eine tolle Idee der Autorin. Da bekommt man Lust, selbst kreativ zu werden.
