Art of Styling Sentences

I taught English lit and writing in high school for decades, and now teach online. I have used this handy book to show student how to effectively vary their sentences so their writing is neither overly wordy nor too basic. It shows how , why and when to use each of 20 different sentence structure patterns with examples form various types of writers along with short practice exercises for the student. Great resource for middle school on up through college and professional writing. I heartily recommend.

We use this with our eighth graders, teaching them all of the sentence patterns. They notice them in their reading, and then start using them in their writing. It's made them bolder and more confident. You end up "sneaking" in lessons on punctuation, parts of speech, parallel structure, and all kinds of other, related topics, which is nice. More bang for my buck, instructionally. It doesn't hurt that they really got into the patterns. Coming up with their own examples was fun. They made them funny, profound, suspenseful.In ninth grade, we use the same patterns they learned in eighth and use them to write using figurative language and then use them to develop their own style. By tenth grade, they are expected to use them in their writing masterfully. As a result, we have better writers than ever before. This has been one of the best things I've ever done for writing instruction with my students. An AP Language teacher told me she used to teach the patterns to her students at the beginning of the year, and suggested we teach them at a younger level so she didn't have to. We all agreed, and it's been fantastic. If you are a secondary English teacher, GET THIS BOOK. My copy is less than a year old and already torn up. Everyone in my department has a copy.

Get all the basics on writing effective sentences. Plus, you'll learn advanced techniques that pack a power punch in expressing what you want to say! The book is easy to read and easy to understand. Writing examples and exercises are included to complement your leaning. I would not teach without it; knowing what's in this book, I wouldn't want to be taught how to write without it; as a pastime or professional writer, I would be embarrassed to say I write without it.I highly recommend this book!

I am a high school English teacher and I was looking for a book that would help my students to write better. This book fulfills this purpose. While it doesn't focus on grammar, it does provide useful sentence instruction. I will continue to use in conjunction with other grammar lessons.

My students responded to this grammar book in a very positive way. The patterns may seem 'simple' at first but, exercises get more complex as you go through the sequences. Several of my students begin to notice patterns in their reading and at times in their own writing. This book is a complimentary next step to 'grammar revolution' or sentence diagramming. I strongly recommend this approach to grammar.

Read the explanations and do the examples and you’ll be a much better writer. It’s a college course in a book, so save the 100 grand of tuition and pick this up instead.

Gostei do livro porque ensina aspectos da sintaxe que as gramáticas geralmente não contemplam de forma tão detalhada e didática. Ou seja, apresenta uma completa e imperdível aula de estilística.Ponto negativo: tive certa dificuldade - superável- de ler as partes do livro em que o texto (como numa coluna) ocupa apenas a metade longitudinal da página, principalmente na tela do celular.Recomendo o livro para qualquer pessoa que queira aumentar sua capacidade de expressão (oral ou escrita).

As a UK Indie writer myself, I love this book. I bought an earlier copy in a second hand book store in New Orleans but it had writing all over it. I guess it was a college text, so I had to buy a new copy. This is a guide book come workbook that deconstructs simple sentence structure; it goes way beyond the simple sentence; it proposes 20 different structures, explaining each, giving examples then asking you the student or wannabe writer to construct your own examples. It is one of the best diy books on improving your writing that I have seen. I highly recommend it.

This book turned out to be what I’d been looking for all this time! It's like the anatomy of the English language. Each chapter explains a sentence pattern followed by examples from classic literature or press. At the end of each chapter, there is an exercise that helps further strengthen the reader’s understanding of the topic.

In India, what they teach in English class is all blah. In high school, theymust focus on sentence-writing skills, something the teachers don't pay attention to.Indian students, unfortunately, become obsessed with vocabulary (I meandifficult words) and ideas, but have little skill of how to use thewords and ideas in an effective sentence.The Art of Styling Sentences is a great book. I have studied it chapter by chapterand exercise by exercise. The book and its drills would do wonders to youif you work on them studiously.Some other books will also help you in writing effective sentences: Style: TenLessons in Clarity and Grace is one; and Don Killgallon's books on sentencecomposing are other brilliant textbooks.Please, please buy the book if you are serious about learning writing skill.
