Odd argument
A rather strange book that equates "national consciousness" with a very narrow 19th century form of nationalism, and then (in a strikingly circular argument) uses this to prove that the prior thousand years of English consciousness didn't count because they didn't meet this definition. It's apparent that he's a sociologist attempting to write a history book, but the main problem is not that he's factually wrong, so much as he's arguing over pointless semantics. I found his line of argument a bit baffling.
