A comprehensive and lucid introduction to this under-researched genre
A brilliant book that succeeds in justifying Funk Music as a genre in its own right, distinguishing it from the genres of Jazz, Soul and Disco with which it is all too frequently amalgamated. This thoroughly comprehensive assessment of Funk addresses the political and racial repercussions of the genre in addition to its unique commercial stance, while also looking in detail at new sounds and instrumental techniques that were developed by Funk musicians. Helpful too is the inclusion of ‘Wordles’ (word-based graphics) at the end of each chapter, since these ultimately reinforce and highlight the key terminology and themes introduced in each section of the book. This book would be ideal for anyone looking for a comprehensive and lucid introduction to this under-researched genre.
