Katana: The Samurai Sword (Weapon)

An excellent, concise history and overview of nihonto
If you've ever been a student of Japanese history--particularly the rich military history of Japan--Stephen Turnbull will be no stranger to you. He's guided my studies on Japanese military history for the last two decades and I own more books written by Mr. Turnbull on the subject--warfare, weaponry and even lore and Japanese philosophy--than any other author by far. His knowledge of the Japanese is vast, his love for the people and culture obvious and his writing style is at once engaging and entertaining. What Turnbull brings to the table with this small volume is a brief look at perhaps Japan's most iconic object: nihonto--or the Japanese sword--in all its forms. This is a small book, to be sure--don't look for an in-depth study of the subject here (Turnbull has a large number of other books if you want to delve into much greater depth and detail)--but what you will find here here instead is a concise, synoptic overview of the Japanese sword and its use in and impact on Japan for over a millennium. The fact that it is an Osprey publication also means the quality of photos, renderings and overall quality are excellent.Katana: The Samurai Sword begins with the development and history of the Japanese sword and explores some of the factors that influenced its design and use throughout Japan's often violent past, including a brief exploration of nomenclature and a look into how the sword is actually made. It goes on to document the use of the sword by some of Japanese history's most important, and often colorful characters, and its impact on both military and social elements of Japanese history, including the sword's actual use by samurai and others. The book also delves into the reasons behind the Japanese sword's powerful iconic value in Japanese culture.I own quite a library of Osprey books and despite their small size they are packed with information and graphics of the highest quality. Osprey's new "Weapon" series of titles--of which this book is an example--doesn't fail to satisfy and it does exactly what one would expect of the entire Osprey collection of books: it provides a brief, concise but relatively detailed look at one of histories most revered and iconic weapons. That Stephen Turnbull was chosen to author this 80-page book is just icing on the cake.

A good but very high level coverage on the topic
I had hoped to gain a little more technical knowledge on the construction of Japanese swords. This was more of a 30,000 foot overview of a variety of topics.

A SURFACE TREATMENT OF A VERY COMPLEX SUBJECT FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT EXPERTS IN THE FIELD.
As with most of his books, the author exposes the reader to the relevent points of his subjects without burdening the reader with the in-depth knowledge required by the serious student of the Japanese sword. Worthwhile as a general guide of the history and use of the Katana throughout the tumultuous history of pre-modern Japan. Very readable!

A Nearly Reverential Work...
Mr. Turnbull covers this subject, which can be highly confusing to the western mind, in a very respectful way. He not only covers the history of the Katana, but it's development and ultimate perfection by the swordsmiths of the age.Due respect is given to the practitioners of the art in equal measure, both in construction and usage. This book should be "Required Reading" for anyone who's interest lies in not just the use, but the art of the Japanese Sword.

Japanes Swords
Gives a broad history of the Katana, the main fighting sword used by the Samurai. Does not go intodetail about markings and ways to identify age or manufacture. Good book for a quick history.

Katana, The Samurai Sword
If it's well researched history of Japan, it's people, warriors, weapons, etc., than any book by Stephen Turnbull won't leave you wanting. The color plates are superb, the prose, history and perspective are first class, Ichi ban. All of my Turnbull books are in my archive and treasured.

Hardly any images of katanas!
I was surprised that this book reads like a thesis on the origins of the katana, but features maybe 5 or 6 katana images only. With a book on katana, you would expect a plethora of beautiful katana photography. But no.If it's a stunning coffee table book you want, look elsewhere. This is more like an essay.

Good level of scholarship
A well laid out and illustrated book with the emphasis, rightly, on history. Even covers the region around the Meiji restoration, which is often glossed over in martial type history books. The level of scholarship is excellent and, yet, is still highly readable. A good value book which covers everything you need to know, unless you're a complete anorak. Worth buying and worth reading.

An interesting insight
A well written and interesting insight in to the history and use of this iconic weapon. Featuring some great traditional (as well as some modern) illustrations. The book follows the development of the japanese sword, explaining how it's form changed due to thechanges in it's use. From the ancient battle fields of Japan to a modern day Dojo, its all covered. You will be hooked from the beginning to the end, only wish it was longer!!!A must read for the beginner Samurai.Stephen Turnbull really does know his stuff.
