Big but surprisingly mundane City set
This is a large Lego box with all the makings of a huge centrepiece birthday or Christmas present, but the design itself seems a bit unfocussed and lacking a centrepiece somehow. Is the bus the main bit? Is the school building the main bit? Looking at the box it feels like the new-style road plates are the main bit, which doesn’t really seem right. The school building is neat in a way, but quite pokey it has to be said. Two floors, with barely the space for two school desks to a classroom, it ends up feeling disappointingly meagre- a starting point for a school build rather than a full environment for storytelling. On top of that the outer shape of the school, while it may be realistic to the often dull architecture of newbuild schools, does feel rather dull by Lego standards. A bit of a climbing wall and some chalkboard-style stickers don’t change the fact that the building itself is, architecturally speaking (and as a Lego building project) a little bit dull. The bus has a standard Lego wheelbase structure and feels very familiar- but again, it’s not especially big, and it feels short on detail. What this set does have in reasonable abundance is a collection of special pieces, none of which are actually unique as far as I’m aware, but many of which might not already be in a beginner Lego fan’s piece kit. The squirrel, the guitar, the skeleton, the traffic light pole, and so on- it’s a bit disparate but it does at least have variety. Also, seven minifigures is more generous than some other sets. Also, nowadays it ought not to need to be said, but Lego still gets a bonus point for including a wheelchair user and accessibility as part of a standard set, without a feeling of tokenism or that it’s being especially advertised to wheelchair users and so on.For a set where the main picture shows trees in the background, it wouldn’t have hurt Lego to put a Lego tree piece or two into the set. This was my first encounter with the new style road plates and I’ve got to say, I’m not sure I see the point. The old style plates never bothered me for any reason (and we have quite a few of them) and while the speed bump is an unusual detail, generally I’m not sold on the new road plate style and the look you get with it. I do see that it could lead to more customisable and shaped road work though. This set is somewhere between 3 stars and 4 stars for me. It lacks ‘wow’ factor but there are some nice ideas in there.
