Sound cuts out
Worked for just over a month and then no longer worked. The sound cuts out. You can bend or straighten the cord just right and sound will return but this is not practical. Terrible quality control. Lots of other reviews with this same issue. Do not buy.

Works perfect, glad I found these
These things work great.Just so you know, these do not reduce sound levels based on db output. These devices are not intelligent. They are simple, non-adjustable resistors that you can plug inline to any headphone device. What it does is choke the voltage down a little and the effect is reduced volume without any noticeable sound quality degradation. I have not measured volume levels with anything because I don't have a tool for that, but my guess is that it reduces sound output by around 25% or so, give or take. I also experimented with these and you CAN chain more than one together for further volume reduction (plug one into the next inline). My 12 year old is a drummer and uses a Roland TD electronic drum set. During weekdays, we demand he uses headphones while practicing and we needed to make sure he didn't have the ability to permanently damage his hearing like I did. Trust me, boys will run the volume full throttle if they can get by with it... and with headphones, you'll never know he is permanently damaging his hearing. After some experimenting, I believe one is enough.. but I have a second one just in case.I would suggest using shrink tubing so the device cannot be removed without you knowing it. 3/8 inch shrink tubing worked out perfect for this. You will only need about 2 inches of it. You just slip it over the connection and heat it with a hair dryer or heat gun if you have one. Search Amazon "Heat Shrink Tubing" for various options. I used black so it does not look suspicious... I didn't want him knowing what it is and trying to defeat it. In case you aren't sure what shrink tubing is, I've attached is a photo so you can get a visual on what it does and what it looks like.

They work great, but seem to break easily
They do their intended purpose quite well, but my three year old has managed to break the tip off of four of them over the course of six months - not intentionally, but just because he isn't super coordinated when it comes to pulling the plug out of his iPad.

A little electrical tape fixed the problem and I like the product
It does its job, but the plastic casing of the cable was a bit off near the connection when opened and was completely frayed and showing the inner wires in the first couple of days. A little electrical tape fixed the problem and I like the product, so I'm still giving 4 stars.UPDATE: I reached out to customer service and they are going to send me a replacement. I don't want to give this product 5 stars because I shouldn't have been sent a defective product in the first place, but I would give it 4.5 stars if I could.

Handy but doesn't last
When I'm using earbuds, I usually listen on the absolute lowest volume and still wish I could turn the music down. This is perfect for me. It worked well, effectively giving me finer control over the volume of whatever I plugged it into without sacrificing the sound quality. The problem was that after about a month the sound started coming out of only one earbud unless I held the cable at a specific angle. The earbuds still work fine without it, so it must be this cable. I'm trying again just because it was so useful and I was so glad to have found it, but I'm not particularly hopeful about the replacement's lifespan.Edited to add: Dropping this down to two stars. It works well but for a very short period before breaking. I went through three of them before I gave up, treating each gently, and they each died after about a month of use. This would be a great product if it lasted. As is, don't bother.

Break Too Easily
I've purchased 2 of these cables and have had trouble with both. After about a couple of weeks, I noticed that the sound would cut out from one side of the headphones or sometimes go completely mute in both ears. I noticed that if I held the cable at a particular angle, the volume would normalize. I was bummed because I really enjoyed this cable for the short time it worked. I After buying a 2nd cable and experiencing the same problem, I realized that the cable is simply a dud. Don't buy!

Great for kids traveling in the car when used with isolation headphones
Use this so my child can listen to audio in the car using my isolation headphones (Direct Sound EX-29) and I don't have to worry about audio being up too loud. Isolation headphones help too because of reduced competition with road noise. I did find that when using this cable with standard headphones, the road noise, along with other in car noises (talking and adult music), can make it a bit difficult to hear sufficiently. For the record, this cable does not provide a fixed db cutoff point, rather knocks 15 or so db off normal volume (using standard impedance headphones). So 10 = 8.5. Works great for standard portable audio devices as they are usually designed with a volume max of approx 105 db (+/-). If a more robust headphone amplifier is being used sound pressure could still exceed safe hearing range. I honestly don't think this will be a problem for most people.

3 units failed after a few hours
I now have 4 of these, and 3 of them failed after just a few hours of use.Lacking a working cable to control volume and protect my kids' ears, I bought headphones that have volume control on the cord. I'm setting that volume control to about 80% and using some glue to lock it there. They can use the iPod to set volume, but can't go to full volume. Problem solved!
