The Grateful Dead Movie on Blu-ray for the first time, in a deluxe 2-disc version, with the feature film on Blu-ray and a DVD loaded with an extensive slate of bonus features five hours of content in all! Co-directed by Jerry Garcia, The Grateful Dead Movie was originally released in 1977, and captures performances from five October 1974 shows at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom. The film has been carefully transferred from the original 35mm film negative in High Definition and is presented in 1.78:1 widescreen aspect ratio. The audio options include a 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio presentation of the original theatrical audio mix, a DTS 5.1 audio mix, mixed from the master multitrack tapes, and a PCM 2.0 audio mix, also mixed from the master multitrack tapes. No liner notes! Not the best sound quality
Worst, and most puzzling, thing about this Blu-ray reissue is that is doesn't come with any liner notes. (This is both annoyingly cheap and unusual for a classic reissue.) Not even the standard one-page fold-over insert. It doesn't even have a track list of songs on the back cover! Secondly, the movie jumps around to random crowd and backstage shots far too often, esp. in the first half. While this gives a good sense of the Deadhead vibe and a time capsule of the culture (though 1974, it's really the tail end of the '60s), I often found it disruptive to getting into the concert experience. After all, this is a CONCERT movie, not a documentary about the Dead. Thankfully, these interruptions taper off for a couple of extended jams toward the end of the movie that are so good they're easily worth twice the price of this Blu-ray package. Musically, and photographically, "Sunshine Daydream" is the far superior product and provides the same sort of Deadhead crowd montages in a much less disruptive way.

The remixed soundtrack is excellent
Note this review is for the latest blu-ray release of the GD Movie, released on January 14, 2022. I’ve watched this move many times over the years. I’ve never seen it in the theater. This release has 2 different 5.1 audio tracks, the original theatrical mix and a new blu-ray mix both in DTS Master HD.I found the original Theatrical mix to be a bit shallow and echoey, while the remastered blu-ray mix is fantastic and sounds just like I imagine it would have been like to attend this show. The disc defaults to the theatrical mix so you need to change it in the discs pop up menu. The video is a bit grainy as can be expected when transferring an older movie from film to high definition blu-ray. I take it as part of the experience of watching it, and realizing it’s from the early 70s. I haven’t checked out the second DVD disc yet but I’m expecting more good sound. Even if you have previously seen or own this movie on different media, purchasing this blu-ray is well worth the price. If you love the Dead like I do you will love this disc set.

BluRay / DVD confusion
Just a head's up. It's stated that this is a multiple format release, and I assumed that meant it came with both a DVD and BluRay of the movie... it doesn't -- it comes with a BluRay of the actual movie, and an additional DVD that contains the bonus material. Not sure I see the logic in that. And I guess I need to get a BluRay player now in order to watch this. This confusion could be remedied by including the publisher's description on the Amazon page, or including an image of the back cover details.

A Must For Dead Heads Or Anyone Just Curious
This film documents a tour-ending five night stand at the Winterland Ballroom in October 1974. These were their last shows with the Wall of Sound, and the film includes amazing performances of many favorites like One More Saturday Night, Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad, Truckin', Sugar Magnolia/Sunshine Daydream, Stella Blue, Casey Jones, and Morning Dew. The bonus disk also includes Dark Star, China Cat Sunflower->I Know You Rider, and Scarlet Begonias. The incredible energy of the band and the crowd comes across very well through my awesome sound system. The Grateful Dead Movie captures the period of the Dead when their music was comforting like a warm blanket while simultaneously bursting with energy. It's a comprehensive look at the many aspects of a Dead show from the band to the sound system to the fans and even the security guards and the concession workers. Plus Bill Kreutzmann will blow your mind. There are cool little moments like when Kreutzmann plays the drums with his elbow or when Keith Godchaux plays the piano with one hand while smoking a joint. But I don't want to ruin any surprises, so see for yourself. This is a must for serious Dead Heads as well as anyone just curious about the Dead. Just make sure to play it loud.

Irresistable
One: This movie captures the Dead live in 1974. Two: It shows them at Winterland, in San Francisco. Three: They sound GREAT!If you still need more reasons to buy this, the sound quality is as good as 1974 could produce, with a lot of help from the included modern remixes. The film gives us a taste of the whole Grateful Dead experience. And the concert itself is simply an orgy of far-out good feelings, alternative-thinking people doing alternative-thinking things, and a smiling and animated Jerry Garcia who is of course the spark that lights the fire in the hearts and the breeze that rustles all the leaves in all the souls present. If this movie has a downside, it is this: Some of the newcomers to the Grateful Dead who watch it will be converted into new, true Deadheads, and they will have to begin that lifelong journey living with the sad reality that Jerry is no longer with us. We are left with only recordings, films, and the memory of a Great Spirit who changed the world for the better with his fingertips.

not much of a review but what the hell, lol
I seen the whole movie, and its great one, the music rules, etc,Anyway I really love music, by far the Grateful Dead and Frank Zappa, mothers of Invention R both of my all tyme favorites. Some of the instrumentals has elements that souinds like Zappa.Probably because both bands were made around the same time.Dead songs I can list prenty..Daek Star, Casey Jones, Freind of the devil, etc.And if you get the late 1980s album live one, some of the songs on second disc def. sounds like Frank Zappa doing the guitar but its Jerry Garcia. Space is the name of one of the songs.Anyway I'm in my mid 30s and dislike most of todays crap music. Both of the guitarist Jerry and Frank rules over gayga, I mean Lady Gaga

WARNING
The movie does not come in 2 formats. It is NOT the Grateful Dead Movie on both blu ray and DVD. The movie is in blu ray ONLY and the 2nd disc is bonus footage and features. I made the mistake of buying this without realizing that and I do not own a blu ray player myself. I'd hoped to be able to watch it on DVD at my house and on blu ray over at my friend's. Anyways, I am not saying anything bad about the movie itself, just pointing out an easy mistake so others don't make it. Happy viewing and long live the dead!

Wherever he goes the people all complain.
I had this on VHS back in the day the quality deterirated somewhat, after many sessions. Getting old and rediscovering all these beautiful tunes that I have on LP but no record player.... But hey this is a dvd, what insight, Kreutzman speaks and I agree with him, that's the music I like.

An oldie but goodie.
Essential viewing for all Deadheads. Every home should have one. It is hard to be objective about a band whose music I love so much, so I won't even try. If you love the Dead, you ought to own this DVD.

yes it is Region 0
As Amazon edited my previous review this is just to say that DVD plays perfectly on my R2 player and my R2 laptop. Although the Amazon listing says it's R1, it's actually R0. Unfortunately the paragraph they edited out was the one that told you how to check this (probably mentioning other website addresses wasn't the thing to do!), but essentially on US websites, including the one operated by the band, the DVD is listed as R0. This was important to me as I delayed my purchase thinking it wouldn't play on my kit.
