Unquestionably, one of the most versatile pieces of gear around.
I have long really appreciated Tech 21's SansAmp products, though I haven't had any of their gear in the last few years. I am mostly playing bass at the moment and have recently really gotten into Tim Starace of YYNOT's playing. I'm not trying to sound like him but he's a great player and very open on how he gets his sound... and it's essentially great technique, a good bass, and a Para Driver. (More recently he's been playing the Geddy Lee signature gear, which is based on the same basic set of SansAmp designs. Geddy's tones in the last Rush tours were from pretty much the same rig---a bass and prototypes of his signature stuff.) For live, Tim relies on the pedal for his sound, due to the fact that backline gear is unpredictable. It might sound fine but you won't know the controls well enough to get the best from the amp. Thepedal strategy is to know your pedal well and just zero the amp, really only relying on it for amplification and not for any tone shaping. This is very common here in NYC because moving amps around isn't really practical---you're pretty much always going to be playing into backline gear. The Para Driver 2 is, in many ways, a three-in-one box, as it can function as a stompbox, a preamp, and a DI. Usually this is a sign it won't be much good at anything but that's totally not the case here. For $200 what it can do is just ridiculous: Warm up a mic, parametric EQ an acoustic, work as a drive pedal for an electric guitar with lots of detailed tone shaping, clean boost a preamp, mimic a stompbox compressor, and many other things. It's got XLR output, parallel impedance-matched direct output, blend control, etc.---see the list and check out the sound samples on Tech 21's web page. The controls are sensitive in that only a bit of movement on the knob does quite a bit, but they work in a very logical manner and aren't pointlessly interactive the way some pedals or amps can be.It's totally worth putting one in your gig bag even if you often get your tones from other sources as it makes a great backup. You could play an entire gig on this pedal alone going direct into a PA if all you need is one or two basic tones and do the rest with your fingers or instrument controls. It's built to Tech 21's usual robust manufacturing specification and isn't battery-thirsty, either, which is a useful feature when the only power outlet is far away from where you'll play. About the only thing it doesn't have is an effects loop. For my application, I find the SVT sample setting a good starting point and tweak from there. I also really like the Air and Rumble Filter buttons, specifically added in the Para Driver 2 for acoustic guitars. Air adds a bit of top end sparkle and Rumble Filter is a high pass filter that eliminates sub-bass frequencies, which I tend to think should get EQed down to stay out of the way of the kick drum. It really helps reduce mud (now if I could only get guitarists to turn the hell down and lay off the gain...). I can get all sorts of great tones from my Fender Jazz fretless from classic tones associated with that kind of bass to sounding like it fits right into an Alice in Chains tune. (My intonation is pretty good and if I don't slide, you wouldn't know I'm playing a fretless.)So, yeah, pick one up. It's great.

Instant tube amp!
I've got the Kemper Profiler, Boss GT1000 Core, and the Line 6 HX Stomp. On their own, these are all great devices which do an incredibly good job at reproducing the tones of dozens of tube amps (or literally every amp ever made in the case of the Kemper). These are digital devices and have digital characteristics to the overall sound they produce, however. Running the SansAmp in front of one of these devices immediately transforms that digital sound into that of a real tube amp. I don't know how it's possible, since there are no tubes in the SansAmp. Adding this little pedal to the front of your signal chain will take your digital modeler and effectively turn it into a tube amp in terms of sound and response. I've heard people sing the praises of the SansAmp for years, but I never expected it would change the character of digital modeling devices, especially to the degree it does. Truly a remarkable piece of gear that will greatly improve your signal chain!

Fantastic DI. I have used it both with my Musicman Sterling as well as my Martin DCPA-4 Rosewood. Able to get a great sound for both instruments running direct. Very impressed both with the sound and versatility of the pedal. Hate that I waited so long to purchase one.

Surprisingly good tone!
This is for the Para DI. I'm a guitar tube amp snob that hated every amp modeler I've ever played. Heard the midrange bite that Michael Sweet from Stryper gets from this box so I bought one for that purpose. Decided I would listen to it with my Les Paul straight into a mixer and studio monitors. Mixer has built in effects so I added a little delay. I dialed in a really, really good Fendery tone and just played. A very acceptable tone you could totally gig or record with. I put my pedalboard in front of it and a stereo chorus after it into the mixer and it sounds amazing. Much more organic and natural than any modeler I've ever played. Maybe I'll eventually get around to plugging it into my guitar amp like I originally intended but dang I'm really enjoying it. Sansamp has impressed me. Yes every guitar player should own one.
