The main idea...I bought these pants to wear under my motorcycle gear on especially cold riding days. I wanted something insulated that would add warmth, but be short so it didn't conflict with my bulky boots. These pants serve that purpose well.Some rambling details...Due to people complaining about the sizing, I went a size up and they are slightly too big for me. I didn't have time to do an exchange before a ride I really wanted to have them on, so I kept them, used them, and appreciated them. I'm about a 32 waist and I ordered the x-large. The pants have a lot of extra room on me, but there's a pull cord for tightening, which works well enough and my outer shell holds them up fine anyway. Based on the other reviews, I'll always have my suspicions that the Large would be small on me, but that is completely unverified.More rambling details...I ride with Klim Kodiak pants and Kodiak jacket. When it's below about 55 to 60 degrees (f) outside, I start adding smartwool base layers under my pants and jacket. Below 45 or so degrees I add a microcell type jacket with my smartwool under my riding jacket. This can sustain me on long rides at or above freezing. Below freezing I start getting chilly. So I bought these pants to use with my smartwool lowers and I can reasonably ride down to about 10 degrees, or a little more uncomfortably down to about 0 degrees. I ride a BMW R1250RT which has quite a bit of fairing, heated seat, and heated grips. I also love the cold. If you have a bike with less wind protection or heating or you're a cold natured person, these values may be different for you, but the insulated mid layer should add significant warmth to your current setup.

They come down to just above the ski boot which is perfectI feel like the sizing is a 1/2 size smaller than u would expect so if your between sizes I would recommend the next size up
