Some of the best sounding and most comfortable phones available for under $300
I started looking for headphones primarily because I wanted some I could wear for hours, and secondarily that sounded really good. (I'm a musician, so sound is important.) These H4s are the best ones I found under $300. I considered the following: B&O H8 JBL E65BTNC Bose QuietComfort 35 (Series II) Sony MDR1000X/B Sony XB950N1 I also tried multiple cheaper headphones like Avantree 40 and Symphonized Headphones. They were exactly that - cheap - mediocre materials and average sound. In this same class are the AUSDOM headphones I already owned, which were also not comfortable when wearing for hours (the reason to start the search). Unfortunately, these cheap headphones get high ratings on Amazon, because most people are just looking for cheap headphones that sound OK. That makes it difficult for those of us really interested in sound. The B&O H8s, which are almost identically constructed, simply didn't sound as good to me as the H4s, which is fine, as the H8's are $100 more. The Bose phones were the most comfortable of all the phones I tried. They're light and fit nicely over the ears. However, the H4s sound slightly better, believe it or not. I was surprised. Fortunately, I was able to get my own tunes hooked up to both for an apples to apples comparison. The H4s performing better worked out well for me, as I was able to get the H4s $100 cheaper than the Bose phones. :) The JBLs sounded great and were fairly comfortable. While they appeared to be sturdy, they apparently have a circuitry defect per multiple Amazon reviews. The Sony MDR1000X/B phones sounded good. In fact, I saw a recent article that suggests they have surpassed the Bose phones as the best ANC phones available. However, I did not get them because a) they were not quite as comfortable as the H4s and b) they didn't sound quite as good as the H4s (or Bose) to me. The Sony XB950N1 phones were some of the most comfortable (light and not tight on the head). As well, they have good bass, as advertised. However, the sound was a tad bit muddier than the H4s. For the price/performance, if I hadn't gotten the H4s, I would have gotten these. As other reviews suggest, the H4s don't have Active Noise Cancelling. However, they block out more sound than most headphones I've ever had. The H4s were the third most comfortable phones I looked at (Bose were #1 and XB950N1 #2). The sound quality on the H4s was the best of the phones I looked at. (Bose was #2.) The construction of the H4s is the best of the phones I looked at - very solid. In fact, a bit too heavy for some people's tastes, but fine by me. The bass on the H4s is definitely there. You just have to make sure you can tweak the sound on whatever player you use, because out of the box the H4s are not as bass-heavy as some prefer. Note that price was a tertiary consideration for me. Amazon has some killer deals on phones that are refurbished or slightly used. I was able to get some practically brand new H4s for about $80 cheaper than new ones.

Gorgeous, unique sound, and ridiculously comfortable.
I bought my wife a pair of bluetooth headphones for her birthday, and I got jealous since I was constantly tethered to the my laptop when listening with my Sennheiser Momentum wired phones. I wanted something where I could listen wirelessly but not sacrifice sound quality. These headphones sound at least as good as my wired phones but with a very unique sound signature that is a little heavier on treble than I expected. Since I'm a treble junkie anyway, this is really working for me. Songs like Ghost Town by Shiny Toy Guns sound intense and the bassier parts of the drum track still cut through enough without blotting out the mids and treble so you get this great wall of sound. Minerva by Deftones sounds like a warzone. The long fuzzed chords blast as intensely as they ever did, but the quieter nuances of the grace notes and the quiet hum of the vocals in the verse are never lost. Acoustic songs like Death Cab for Cutie's I Will Follow You Into The Dark sound bright and clear and the vocals feel detailed like you're in the room with the band. I'm relistening to all my Spotify playlists. It's like hearing all my favorites for the first time. The design is beautiful and the earpads feel like clouds. The memory foam in the pads blocks outside noise so well that I have to take them off when I need to hear something outside of them instead of just pausing the music like I do with the Sennheisers. I'm currently in my second hour of wearing them and where some phones seem to get heavier on your head, these still feel like they're barely there. My only complaint is that I had to boost the volume significantly with my EQ to get the volume level I wanted, but I will note that my desired volume level is considered "unwise." Even with that, there is still zero distortion. These may be my favorite headphones. Period. **Edit: New Noise by Refused. I've never heard that song NOT distort in a pair of headphones. I thought that's just what the song sounded like. Holy moly. I've got chills.

Trust the Amazon Refurbish Products! Re-written
About 2 weeks ago, I wrote a “hot mess” of a review for one of the products I really-really like. I have since disconnected my device from the “Grammarly” word processing platform and I am re-writing my review. Pleased don’t go out and condem the writing platform it is just that I still have a lot to learn about it, Let’s try this again!!! I spent 3 weeks looking for a “forever” set of Bluetooth head phones. I researched and reviewed several of the well-known top of the line speakers that were out there I eventually resolved myself to “spend some money” and get a quality product. After an exhaustive search, I “settled” on a refurbish B & O headset. I was pleased to be able to get a used set and I anxiously waited to get them. I found a set of H4 Bluetooth model that didn’t include noise cancellation. I thought back on an article I read about the benefits of noise cancelation, then I remembered how many times I switched off my NC because it changed the sound quality to a loss. I was also pleased that they were Amazon refurbished because I trusted that Amazon “had my back” if anything went haywire. I was also pleasantly surprised that it was delivered the morning it was said to be delivered. I started to worry when the headset came in the wrong box for it’s model; however everything was “up-hill” from there! The headphones paired in record time. I then began to listen to a British piano artist last name is Alex Ffrench) who plays out of this world beautiful full-bodied sound. It was wonderful. In short, I’m waiting for “the other shoe to drop!” This is the easily the best headset I’ve used. The sound quality sound is better than expected in spite of being refurbished. I suspect that problems will eventually come but right now all of the “positive” boxes have been checked and “life is good.” Again, the good news is that it comes with a refurbished warrant for an admirable length of time. I’m riding this wave right now and I have nothing but good things to say right now. I exceeded all of expectations. I’ll follow up in 90 days and let’s see how things worked out!

Punchy, Nice Sound Stage, with Subdued Style a Step Above
People have pretty individualized sound tastes, so I'll just say it's punchy, and the Beoplay app allows you to tighten/expand/modify the sound stage, and I like it. The bluetooth connection is good. No crackling, etc, cheap earbuds/headphones make when you move, etc. The battery claims are legit, though I'm sure it'll vary by an hour or so based on what volume you have it set at. Can't speak for call quality, as I will never use these to make/receive phone calls (who even makes phone calls anyway). No Active Noise Cancelling, but that also isn't a feature I was looking for. But, it's almost impossible to tease apart the cost of ANC, so fair or not, these will be compared to the increasingly high percent of bluetooth headphones in the multihundred dollar range that come with it. Comfort. Oh boy. Those lambskin earpads are so comfortable. They are technically over the ear, and they're fairly average in that, which is to say they're round, rather than oval, so they barely truly go over the ears on the top/bottom sides (since our ears aren't round; an issue I've had with literally every round shaped earpadded headphone I've ever used; I do not understand at all why oval isn't the shape every headphone uses). But, I really can't overstate how comfortable the earpads are, so unlike most round earpads, I didn't find them annoying at all. That said, they do get warm. That, however, is also true of any earpad I've ever used that wasn't naked mesh/foam and fingers crossed that actual leather won't just disintegrate into a thousand tiny pieces like cheaper pleather does within a year or two of use. The physical controls are fine, but they'd be immensely better in my opinion if they were accompanied by a voice or better audio prompts. Instead, it just uses very subdued single beeps...which is probably intentional. Just not my preference. After all, while it has a led status light to let you know it's pairing, etc, you can't see that light when you're wearing them. I'm still not really sure about the led status light as it pertains to charging. My headphones charge, but they blink orange when they get to ~70% charge until they get full. Nowhere in the B&O help article about the status light does it indicate blinking orange, and blinking red supposedly has to do with bluetooth pairing issue or low battery issue, neither of which makes any sense in this case. Charging is supposed to be a steady orange, which it is while it's below 70%. Possibly not coincidentally, that last 30% charge takes the lion's share of the 2.5 hour full charge time (probably closer to 3 hours). There is a B&O help article that says blinking orange means charging, but that help article is for an entirely different model, so it's a mystery, but it doesn't impede my use of them, so... Oh, if you don't have a thousand micro usb cables laying around, the one that comes with the headphone is super short. The aux cable that comes with it if you want to use it wired is a bit cheap feeling (ie: iphone charging cable that's gonna split after two weeks cheap feeling). I've never used it. There are none of the "neat" convenience features you increasingly see on bluetooth headphones, ie: auto mute. They definitely have a style tax at their retail price on the B&O website, but they're pretty much always less than that here on Amazon, and I think at the current price range ($200-220), the price is perfectly respectable if you're looking for this particular aesthetic in a good pair of bluetooth headphones with zero frills in terms of extra features. Style, like sound, is also pretty subjective, but I despise the looks of most headphones (I thought both the Sony and Bose ANC headphones that are found on virtually every buying guide to be quite good, but ugly beyond belief, as a reference point...and unfortunately, most headphones follow similar aesthetics), and this is pretty much the only one's under $300 I like the look of (was torn between the grey with gold caps vs full price on the B&O site for the storm blue with silver caps...I think if the storm blue had used gold caps instead, I'd have pulled that trigger) . I have go up another $160 for the next set of bluetooth headphones I like the looks of, and while I was tempted...I just don't use wireless headphones enough to quite justify that, and they don't have leather earpads, and did I mention how damn comfortable the H4's earpads are? Definitely need to purchase a case/soft pouch if you intend to carry them in your bag. I'm not about to put it to a test, but I imagine the caps would get scratched easily if you just let them jostle around unprotected.

The perfect headset
The Beoplay H4 is simply gorgeous from a design standpoint and at $149 the sale price felt like a steal. The headphones come with a male to male audio cable which is very convenient if you do not wish to use Bluetooth or the battery runs out of charge. The audio output quality of these headphones is superior to that of most headphones I have owned. The sound is clean, well separated and perfectly balanced, and won't distort even at maximum volume on most songs. The only headphone set I own that comes almost close in terms of audio performance at default settings is a Pioneer Steez SE-MJ751. The H4 is just as lightweight although it has metal parts, and far more comfortable. Unlike the Steez, I can have them over my ears for hours without feeling any strain or pain. The Steez also does not come with an app that feature Bluethooth volume and quad-pole tone control that gives you full control of your headphone's bass and treble parameters. The B&O app also allows you to store and switch between your preferred tone profiles for your headphones. Overall, I am very happy wit this purchase and frankly, it feels like I got more than I paid for. It oozes quality and attention to details.

Polished, with Powerful and Silky Smooth!
There is a reason why bang and Olufsen charge premium prices, because they deliver a premium product. Unless you are wealthy or a sound aficionado these are probably an unjustifiable luxury. However, if you are a music connoisseur and regularly use Bluetooth headphones then these are actually a good value believe it or not. The lambskin covered memory foam pads feel like clouds and I seriously look forward to putting them on every single time. Most importantly, the sound is amazing! They have a deeply rich, balanced and polished sound. I am especially hard to please because I like powerful tight and pronounced bass as well as a balanced clear sound profile. Banging & Olufsen obviously have a unique proprietary digital signal processor because you can distinctly hear the depth, richness, excitement and definition in the sound signature. It's hard to describe but the sound feels silky and polished even at high volumes. Every nuance is clean, clear and cuts through what is a very powerful and exciting sound. The bass is not only powerful and tight but it doesn't overpower the mid & treble. Though I am admittedly a bass junkie, I still want to hear the articulation in the upper registers, and these manage to do that. These even have enough sub-bass to create the illusion of a 3D soundscape. I actually prefer these to the B7 which has a noticeably flatter and less exciting sound. The B4 also has the new Bluetooth 4.2 spec which I have not seen on any other product in its price range. Another noteworthy characteristic is that there isn't any volume or sound difference between battery powered and plugged in.

Great if you know what you want!
Fantastic headphones! When looking at this price point, know what you’re looking for. I knew I wanted headphones that had quality sound with nice aesthetics. And these provides just that, sound is great, low on the bass end but I knew that buying them. Note: I’m not an audiophile by any means, but personally I found the sounds to be well balanced. Not too heavy in either direction. Just enough on the low end for me. Highs are good too. The headphones seem durable and the lamb leather on the cups are sooo comfortable. And I have a big head for those that are concerned on the big end. In conclusion: Get these of you’re looking for aesthetically pleasing headphones with high quality sound. No gimmicks on these period. Here are my quick suggestions: Bass: SkullCandy Crushers (synthetic bass, ridiculous!!! battery life, “cheap”) Features: Sony MDR1000x Comfort/Balanced: Bose QC35 Just to name a few that I was looking at. Anyhow good luck! And definitely consider these!

Broken within six months
I purchased these headphones in March. The sound quality is great, pairing is easy, and the beoplay app allows for a greater control of your sound. The only issue is they're falling completely apart. I wear my headphones daily, and these have not held up. As you can see in the photo, one arm has completely dislocated. I can shove it back into place, but this means the headphones are not longer adjustable at all. Not pictured in the photo is that the leather along the headband is also starting to thin and wear out. Part of the appeal of these headphones was that they look good- if you're a daily wearer having a less ugly pair of headphones is great- but they don't anymore. Very disappointing for their price and the investment I made in them.

Nice. Very nice.
I’ve never spent anything like this much on headphones before but the H4 mk1 reduced to £119 drew me in. Would have quite liked the gray but not for £50 extra and definitely not £200 for the mk2. Well, the sound quality is nothing less than I expected. Not blow away awesome but very nice indeed. The B&O app is nicely done and the EQ capability is subtle. What I really love is the quality feel of the materials used. The styling and finish have obviously taken a lot of work and the comfort level is outstanding. They don’t slip on your head. Lying down, walking around or sitting down all day they stay put and don’t make your ear holes sweaty. The adjustability provides the perfect clamping force on the noggin such that you forget you’re wearing them after a while. Battery life is awesome so far. Lack of a carry bag or case is no problem for me and let’s face it, you can buy them very cheaply on amazon. Another plus for me is that they don’t have any LEDs blinking away under normal use. I never thought I could heart a pair of headphones but then I’ve never had a B&O product before. These are wicked!
