Pacific Rim Uprising (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray)

An Extravaganza of Mediocrity in Plot, Acting, and Character Development.
I hate giving three-star reviews. Who reads three-star reviews!? But, it is what it is. Is it a fun movie? Yeee... kind of. Is it a good plot line? It's okay, although pretty forgettable and pretty darned contrived. Are the characters good? Certainly no better than the first Pacific Rim (which I loved, but whose main character was downright yawn-inducing.) I watched the movie with my 22 year old son and halfway through the movie I paused it and quipped, "You know what this kaiju movie could really use....? Some KAIJU!" They don't show up until much too late in the movie (except in flashback type settings) and they almost seem like an afterthought. Sort of like, "Oh crap we made this Pacific Rim movie but forgot to put any kaiju in the plot." The acting is not horrible, but certainly not terrific. (Sorry, John Boyega gets way too much credit as an actor.) It's worth watching, maybe even renting, but it's definitely not worth the twenty bucks I spent on the blue-ray. Save your money for a better movie.

utter dookie
What a wreck. It's everything the original wasn't, like trite, irritating, rife with overused character dynamics, and pandering. Just the initial friction between Boyega and Eastwood was so fake and stilted (mostly the writing, not necessarily the performances) that I had to try hard to carry on watching. This was terrible. If it existed in a vacuum, without the existence of the original (which was also a B-movie, yet at times brilliant and beautiful) it could have been just another stupid action flick. Taken in light of what came before and what this could have been, this movie is an atrocity.

Not Believable
The writers failed to find the balance between science and fantasy to make this movie believable. Even though the realism of the effects was there, reality was thrown out too many times. The scene where the hero jaeger is re-entering Earth's atmosphere is a rime example. It's entire body is glowing hot from the intensity of the temperatures. Yet, the two human pilots who are exposed to this heat from the gaping hole in their piloting bay, are completely fine, instead of being burned up. There are too many more incidents like this to list. Along with the campy dialogue and week antagonist, this is merely a film to watch for the CGI, if that.

Abysmally boring
There was something fun and unique about the first movie that did not get carried through to this grim, Power Ranger-feeling nonsense. What a slog – I felt like the characters in Annihilation, entering the bubble with trepidation, then losing all sense of time and space, and finally fighting against myself to decide whether or not to shut the damn thing off and walk away. Alas, I decided to finish it for some reason. Still can't forgive myself for that.

Can’t beat the original
The storyline is too far off from the original and the characters feel underdeveloped. While the visuals are excellent and the acting from the leads (John Boyega and Scott Eastwood) the film left me wanting to the watch the original and put this to the back of dvd pile. The other issue is the score. The original score is powerful and moves seamlessly with the action and storyline. However, the music for Uprising was a pale reflection of the original score. I believe that’s because it is a different composer that tried to imitate it rather than finding their own version for the film. I gave it 3 stars because I enjoy the franchise and hope that of they make more of them, Warner Bros learns from worked in the first film.

Fun, but geared toward a younger audience than the original
We enjoyed the original Pacific Rim as a fun popcorn flick and scifi romp. Pacific Rim Uprising is decent, but the weakness is that this movie is somehow geared toward a younger audience. There are acrobatics inside the robots as the Jaegers mimic the actions of their drivers who are performing flips and somersaults, the main characters are much younger than in the original movie, and it just feels less realistic. (Yeah, that doesn't sound logical at all, does it?!) We couldn't put our thumb on everything that changed (maybe an influx of Power Rangers?), but even as the violence escalates the peril doesn't feel as serious as it did in the original Pacific Rim and even our twenty-something daughter felt this movie was "younged-down."

Bright and playful.
I enjoyed the first Pacific Rim movie because it was unapologetic about being a 'giant robots vs. giant monsters' film that looked beautiful and didn't have to be thought about too hard. The sequel, although not as great overall as the first film, isn't terrible to me. It's a good contrast to the first film in that we get to see the Jeagers in daylight most of the time, even though they kind of look like giant robotic power rangers. I enjoy the little bits of comedy and the demonstrations of the different levels of society post-kaiju war. I really only have one big issue with this movie. The way the final mega-kaiju is killed is kind of ... meh. I get it, they let it fall out of the sky like a 275ft tall bullet, but it just felt sub-par to me. I would have appreciated a little more added grit like the final fights in the first movie (the new gadgets that the Jeagers had were fun to watch, but I think they showed them off a bit too much, whereas the first movie tried to show off all the details of each fight).

This movie will not win any major awards but it's a fun ride. Definitely not as good as the first movie but its good. I especially like the relationship between Boyega and Spaeny which is very much like an older brother-little sister relationship. Unfortunately, Mako is completely wasted in this movie. Such a great character in the first movie. I would rather she was left out of the sequel entirely than have her included in the movie as she was. The visuals are pretty good. The action is there. The acting is...what you might expect. The plot was a bit silly and forced. I like a movie that I can re-watch whenever I'm in the mood. Despite the 2 star rating, this movie is re-watchable and fun.

gute Unterhaltung....
