Morbido e musicale

The little black magic box
The performance of this little black box is beyond my expectations. It’s way better than my 20 years old Sonic Frontier which is much bigger and heavier. Most importantly is the sound produced which is very neutral to me.

Audio Signal Does Not Lock Consistently
I read tons of reviews, with the shiny star being Stereophile's consistent A rating, year after year. Also, if you google this unit on Amazon (instead of Amazon's search function) you'll find 53 mostly positive reviews. To the positive, its a very well built piece of kit and looks great in black. I tried both the USB and Optical connection, both sounding very good, with the Optical being slightly smoother. In my system of a YBA Integre Integrated amp, Sonus Farber Chameleon T speakers, with DH Labs Silver Sonic wiring - the V90 sounded similar to my current PeachTree DAC ITx. The MF had more detail, while the Peachtree was more full sounding. But those are minor points. I really liked the MF V90 sound.I had read on Amazon that a few users had issues with the audio signal locking. Others mentioned no such problem. For me, within the first 20 minutes of auditioning, the lock signal dropped repeatedly. Given the track record on this issue, I took it as a sign to return the unit. What good is the sound if I have to fuss all the time over the signal locking!?!?On another note, the Musical Fidelity warranty is only valid if bought from an authorized dealer. A number of seller's on Amazon are not authorized dealers, including the one I bought from, TurnTable Lab. You can go to the MF website and do a dealer search to see who is authorized. For instance, two other sellers at the time of this review - Dedicated Audio, and Listen Up are authorized dealers. In the 53 reviews section I mentioned above, one of the most helpful rated reviews had this exact issue of buying from an unauthorized seller, the warranty being invalid, and being stuck with a brick. If the lock issue hadn't reared so quickly, I likely would have kept the unit. Yet I consider it fortunate given other reviewers had the issue appear well after the Amazon return window had closed.
