the language is stunning.

It's all been said, and I won't attempt to add much. I'd meant for many years to read the book, with no idea of what it would turn out to be. I vaguely expected a sort of monograph, with descriptions of the ecology of the species, breeding habits, the effects of weather movements etc, complete with highly detailed tables of statistics, graphs and so on. Of course it's nothing of the sort. It is a magnificent and compelling work, in a unique prose style that is Baker's own.I don't think we can post links here, but a search will find Robert Macfarlane's article in The Guardian dated 15 April 2017, and titled "Violent spring: The nature book that predicted the future". That should give anyone tempted by this book some idea of what they will find in its pages.

For those who are interested in reading about such creatures this is a truly beautiful book. It is a 'story' of an obsession with a magnificent bird that so perfectly evokes a sense of the grandeur of the landscape and the majesty of the peregrine within.

You don't have to be a birdwatcher to enjoy this book. It has lovely descriptions of nature, wonderfully written.I find it very peaceful to pick up for a casual read, put down and pick up again later. Even better when reading in my garden and a birdsong chorus from the blackbird and robin.

Love this! I came back from kindle to feel paper again! I'm relearning how to hold a book. As for the writing? They discuss synesthesia in the intro...it's writing you can touch, smell and taste.

What can I say that's not been said already ...except that if you are even remotely interestef in landscape, wildlife, or just watching clouds go by, buy this and read it immediately!
